About the Author
Douglas E. Hough is Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University, where he teaches health economics, behavioral economics, and strategy at the Carey Business School and the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Hough has served as a research economist at the American Medical Association and as a consultant in three health care strategy firms.

this is a great introduction.

I have represented HMOs and hospitals, taught antitrust, and occasionally teach pricing strategy or parts of it in a graduate business school strategic pricing program. So, I am well familiar with the industries, economics, and behavioral economics.
This book is on my recommendation list in our annual Christmas letter. For those unfamiliar with behavioral economics, this is a great introduction...no, it is more than an introduction, it is a good and thoughtful literature review with VERY original, concrete recommendations. It is very practical, and that comes through, I think, because the author was in the private sector before he became an academic.
You will enjoy this book.

Lots of anomalies, very few proposed solutions

I am a big fan of behavioral economics, but I was disappointed in this book. It does a great job of highlighting "anomalies" - things that humans wouldn't do if we were perfectly rational. The power of behavioral economics, however, lies in its power to provide solutions, or nudges, that help us overcome our shortcomings and reach better outcomes. The book does not propose any solutions or testable hypotheses. In fact, even the last chapter, in which the author purports to offer some, he shies away.
This is a great book for a doctoral candidate looking for a dissertation topic. It's a disappointing book for the rest of us.

Yes, it is halfway between a textbook and a normal book. It's the sort of book one must mull over. But it is worth it. Really opened my eyes on the industry. It also made me think about how I can be a better consumer.
