About the Author
Jim Radcliffe is one of the most overlooked elements in the success of Oregon’s student-athletes. Now in his third decade as the school’s head strength and conditioning coach, he not only plays a significant role in the Ducks football program as the designer of the year-round conditioning calendar, but he also has been quick to aid in the athletic development of athletes in all sports in his work with Olympians and World Championship medalists.
Radcliffe has guided football, basketball, track and field, baseball, and volleyball athletes during much of his career. He furnishes the student-athletes with a variety of exercise through weight training and lifting systems and is a noted authority on exercises dealing with the improvement of speed and quickness. He became assistant strength coach at Oregon in 1985, a position he held for two years before assuming the duties of head coach in that area.
Radcliffe taught and coached a variety of sports and was the athletic trainer at Aloha High School from 1978 to 1983. He then did graduate studies at Colorado and worked in private business before joining the Ducks staff. Graduating from Pacific in Oregon with a degree in physical education and health in 1980, he played four seasons as defensive back and was captain of the special teams. Radcliffe earned his master’s degree in biomechanics from Oregon.
Active in national organizations surrounding his profession, Radcliffe has been certified by USA Weightlifting, CSCCa, and the NSCA. He also has written books, been published in numerous professional journals, and produced videos on plyometrics.
Bob Farentinos is a fitness professional and lifelong athlete. He has competed in weightlifting, cross-country skiing, and rowing and has won national titles and masters championships in all three sports. Farentinos earned his PhD in biology from the University of Colorado and spent many years as a professor and researcher at various universities, including Colorado, Michigan, Ohio State, and Johns Hopkins. He has published extensively in scientific journals and has written wildlife stories for children as well as numerous lay articles on exercise, health, and fitness.
In the 1980s, Farentinos owned and managed a sport and fitness center in Boulder, Colorado, designated as an official training facility for the U.S. ski team. At the center he trained and coached Olympic and professional athletes in cycling, running, triathlon, Nordic and alpine skiing, weightlifting, climbing, and mountaineering. During that time he also worked with athletes and coaches at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
From 1984 through 1991, he competed in the United States Ski Association (USSA) Great American Ski Chase, a national series of 50-kilometer cross-country races, winning several age-class championships. He participated in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary as a technical representative for one of his ski equipment sponsors.
Farentinos began his rowing career in 2003 at the age of 62. Within a few years he was rowing competitively, winning gold and silver medals in Northwest Regional Masters Championships in single sculling. In 2007 he won the Canadian National Masters Championship and has competed successfully since then in national and regional regattas and head races in single and double sculling.
Farentinos volunteers his time and expertise designing workout facilities and exercise programs for youth dealing with substance abuse and addiction. He uses exercise and sport to redirect their focus toward healthier and more productive lifestyles.
Farentinos lives in Portland, Oregon.

Strong book on plyometerics

Radcliffe and Rarentinos' book is intended to be a practical and comprehensive guide to plyometeric exercises, a method of developing explosive power. Background information for trainers, coaches, and self-directed athletes is included in the first four chapters. Specific drills including directions and black and white photos follow in the second section of the book. Select drills have online video demonstrations. The third section of the book advises users how to incorporate individual drills into a training program, along with sport specific training. A handy chart at the beginning of the book provides readers with a list of drills organized alphabetically, divided by upper-body, core, and lower-body drills. The emphasis and difficulty are given for quick reference.

Excellent resource and guide.

This is the second edition to the original 1999 book of the same name. I was not aware of the first edition so my review is a complete review of the second edition
The book is well organized. I particularly liked the Drill Finder page up front, as well as the page guiding the reader to the online video. The individual drill pages were excellent but it is quite helpful to have the voiceover as well as the video in order for the reader to completely master the nuances of the drills. One small issue is that in the section of the video and the book which guided the reader through the assessment portion of the sequence, the example used were of perfect execution and the way the assessment is supposed to look. While the authors incorporated some common problems found during the power assessment, it would be good to have a demonstration of common problems in order for the reader to identify the problems from an example.
Part I of the book detailing the Plyometric Training itself was superb, those four chapters laid an excellent ground work for the reader to gain a systematic understanding of what plymetric entails. The four chapters laid out the reason for doing plyometric training, the necessity for the trainer to be aware of the potential dangers associated with plyometric training if the traninee is not well prepared. it laid out the theory as well as the execution aspects of the training. The third chapter talk about the equipment and method used in plyometric training. Chapter four is the all important chapter on power assessment of the weaknesses of the person being trained.
The bulk of the rest of the book is centered around the individual drills for each area of concentration, but the more important section in the latter part of the book is the portion devoted to Plyometric programming for individual needs, sports, how to complex train, and more importantly, how to program a year long program. This part is also worth its weight in gold. It is a how to guide for the beginning coach/trainer to implement the program, it answers the questions at the front of their minds and even though the guide is not comprehensive, it gives the coach/trainer ample material to get started.
I would highly recommend this book.

√ Continuum Training for Olympic Weight-Lifting, Wrestlers, and Pole Vaulters!

I was not familiar with this sports training methodology, and I was delighted to learn about it. The photos and illustrations are clear and easy to follow. I especially liked the various charts showing "12 Week Conditioning Programs." They are arranged by athletic specialty, such as rugby, football, skiing, etc.
One aspect of HIGH-POWERED PLYOMETRICS particularly impressed me: The authors cite numerous scientific research papers when they make a point. For example, the authors note on page 11, "Research believe the rate of stretch to be more important than its length or magnitude." Then, the authors cite two separate research studies to support their conclusion. In other words, these are not just theories concocted in the locker room--they are based on experience and extensive research.
The book itself is well-designed and well written. The beginning of the book contains a "Drill Finder," to help the reader located the desired exercise. An appendix contains End-notes supporting the authors' statements, arranged by chapter. There is an online video that the reader accesses using a passcode in the book itself.
√ All in all, an impressive, professional book. Recommend!
