excellent resource

I must say this is one of the best books I have found to teach an introductory course in project management. It is flexible enough to use for both undergraduate and graduate courses. The third edition follows the latest PMBOK Guide, so it's a great resource for anyone planning to take the PMP exam. This book goes beyond just preparing students for an exam by including lots of information on "how" to perform various project management tasks. I really like the way a concept is explained and then an example is provided on how to apply that concept. There are several exercises and team projects to help reinforce student learning. There are also many real-world references showing how organizations do things right and wrong in project management, plus new xkcd cartoons to lighten things up. I applaud the author for self-publishing this third edition after Cengage decided not to update it. Yes, there are dozens of introductory project management books on the market, but this one is comprehensive, easy-to-read, includes a great free Web site with templates, interactive quizzes, Jeopardy-like games, etc., plus the price is right! Why should we make our students spend over $100 on a dry textbook when they can get this one and actually read it for under $60? The new appendices with guides to using Project 2007 and @task (the leading web-based PM software) are excellent. The instructor materials are also outstanding, and the author is very responsive to instructor inputs. I highly recommend this book.

best book for teaching introductory project managment

Disappoints in several areas

I don't normally evaluate a book (especially a 'text book') on aesthetics - but in this instance I will. It's ugly. From poorly designed cover through to textual layout that detracts from the structure of the content rather than enhances it, this is one of the most unappealing books I've seen. However, as most won't be too concerned with this as a problem I won't go into the detailed examples.

Quality: p.246 "Error! Bookmark not defined" How does that end up in a published text? There were proof-readers? Perhaps not. P.319: Question: Which knowledge areas include tasks related to monitoring and controlling? Answer: All of them! Well, not quite.

100 pages of this is related to software usage - not quite value unless you want to use both MS Project and @Task and you have little experience with either.

Questions related to 'Alpha Project Managers' isn't appropriate in a publication of this type. While explained earlier in the publication as related to a single text, the content of metrics is repeated in the book and then the Q&A asks the reader about 'Alpha Project Managers'. I don't think jargon is appropriate.

P.353 - I suppose you can reference Wikipedia if you wish to establish a definition. Nasty for instructors when students start to query the authors ability to do so when they aren't entitled in their own papers.

However, I will be positive and indicate:

This is a readable text (at least at the level of the incremental detail.) It offers a lot of additional online instructor content (of value if you wish to use this text as the basis for a course. Much less so if you don't.)

A big YES for the McKeowns Price Guide...

If and when you need a guide on old camera equipment, and get a fair idea of what you're after or want to sell has none, or signifivant value, this is definitely the book you going to want to own. Has an enormous amount of equipment and you won't miss much! 100% of all collectible or non-collectible camera equipment it doesn't cover, but there won't be any book that ever will. This is your best bet, guaranteed!

If you are just interested in old camera equipment, this book will keep you going for hours at the time, but what's more, you will grab it over and over again in years to come. A normal book you read once, when it's a good one possibly more than once... but you'll never stop turning the approximately 1250 (!) pages the McKeown's price guide to Antique and Classic cameras offers you. I bought mine in 2005, so ten years later I can safely make that statement...

One thing I have to say though, it might not be 100% accurate on specifications, as in the 2005/2006 version, McKeowns still ensisted that the Contax RTS 1, a camera released in 1976, has a CDS lightmeter, while the RTS was actually the first camera where the revolutionary fast Silicon photo diode was used to measure the light! Then I guess the specs are not the main concern when creating a book about equipment value. I can recommend this book, with no hesitation!

The "Camera Bible" for serious camera collectors/retailers!

I am a retired public school art teacher who also taught black & white film photography classes years ago. I collect vintage and antique film and cine cameras as a long time hobby. I have a decent collection of several hundred cameras and some collecting guidebooks. I considered several of my books to be OK but since I purchased my first copy of McKeown's Guide to Antique and Classic Cameras, I don't even look at the other books now that I have this amazing and very easy to read comprehensive camera collectors guidebook. I now consider all of my other camera books "comic books" in comparison to McKeown's! I could go on and write pages of beaming review complements but in a nutshell, there is no better book for anyone who is starting out or a serious camera collector and/or retailer who wants the only book you will ever need with the possible exception of future issue releases. My only small suggestion to the publisher because the book is so massive and not cheap; is a consideration of a periodic condensed "update supplemental booklet" when new cameras and prices are added vs a whole new book for those who already own a copy. Other than that I could not be happier!

The standard reference on old cameras.

This is the most recent update to the best work I know on old still cameras. It adds considerable data to the earlier versions.
As film photography passes from everyday life to a specialist hobby and film cameras move from being utilitarian tools to being collectors' items, this edition of this book may stand (as there's been no update for seven years) as the definitive work for collectors and historians. I'm not sure the prices are at all accurate, but, as a collector, I don't use this as a price guide but as a research tool.

Biopunks, as defined by AP science and technology reporter Wohlsen, are part of a loosely knit, multifaceted movement to find ways to permit people to engage in DNA research without the restrictions and costs imposed by the scientific and medical establishment.�Practitioners, some self-taught, set up shop in their kitchens or garages, believing that significant biological advances are more likely to occur as more people get involved in the enterprise. For the most part opposed to intellectual property rights, they prefer the open-source model used to design some computer software. Although biopunks have not yet made any significant scientific advances, they view themselves as "simplifying and domesticating" biology. Though his prose is a bit dry, Wohlsen introduces some fascinating, altruistic individuals, people who would like to fight disease without profit as their primary motive. While Wohlsen conveys, and seems to share, their excitement, he provides little critical commentary on their prospects for success. He also splits his attention between true DIYers and others who are working outside the scientific establishment because they haven't been able to find jobs or funding. Great raw material but could have been organized and written better

"I was excited to read this book since I am very interested in bioinformatics and punk (although the book has nothing to do with punk music). Although I wouldn't call myself a practitioner of do-it-yourself (DIY) biology, I do work for a very entrepreneurial bioinformatics and software company. The general theme of Biopunk by Marcus Wohlsen, is that we are arguably reaching a point in biotechnology similar to where computing technology was in the 1970's. That is, where the germ of successful companies can grow out of innovations by a handful of people working on a shoestring in garages and basements. Think about Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak starting Apple in their garage, or Bill Gates and Paul Allen starting Microsoft while barely 20 years old. The point, echoed by many of the people who show up in the book, is that until recently biotechnological innovation has been only accessible to scientists at commercial companies or in academic labs.

Biopunk has tons of good raw material and no end of interesting stories (bridges made of trees, a lab engineering bacteria to produce malaria medicine, etc.) but not all of them seem relevant to the main thrust of the book (that malaria lab is a commercial ones, not DIY). If Wohlsen had expanded his book to cover more territory and taken more care to weave these stories together, it could have been a powerful summary of current trends and future predictions in biotechnology."

Science at the Kitchen Table

This is a great book for anyone who has an interest in science, or wants to see advances in medicine at greater rates that we've seen them so far. You don't have to know science to read this book. It is written so that people with no scientific background can understand the science. If you've got a teenager with an interest in science, you should have them read this book. It will inspire them to broaden their horizons beyond the typical research lab.

Tremendous Introduction

A tremendous introduction to one of the most exciting branches of individual superempowerment emerging today. The book is structured around the key figures in this movement today, and tells their stories quite well. It's not an exhaustive academic tome and doesn't try to be (appropriately so). I started out pretty familiar with this subject matter (having done much of the same research myself, including interacting with some of the people in the book), but learned a few things and `met' some very interesting people along the way.

Marcus Wohlsen does a great job laying out the contours of the movement. You get the culture, the philosophy they build on, the historical backing for their work, where they currently stand (without some major leaps, there's not a big chance of anyone solving cancer in their home wetlab) and where they're possibly headed. He also addresses the security threat (of course there is one, but the problem is social deviants, not these DIY garage hackers of living things).

Overall, it becomes clear that the most interesting times for biopunk are ahead. They're limited by a lack of cheap toolkits, good enough processes, funding, and knowledge. As they accomplish more over the coming years, they're going to have to deal with regulation and taking things to market. It's an interesting frontier and Wohlsen does this justice.
