Always there must remain the Unknownable—the Absolute. "Om," therefore, is the word we use to express this Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent power. The term "mortal" we have already defined. The compound immortal, applied to individual man, stands for one who has made his "at-one-ment" with Om, and who has, while still in the mortal body, re-cognized himself as one with Om. This is what it means to escape the "second death," to which the merely mortal consciousness is subject. This is the goal of every human life; this is the essence, the substance of all religious systems and all philosophies. The only chance for disputation among theologians and philosophers, lies in the way of accomplishing this at-one-ment. There is not the slightest opportunity for a difference of opinion as what they wish to accomplish. Admitting then, that the goal of every soul is the same—immortality—(the mortal consciousness cognizing itself as Om), we come to a consideration of the evidence we may find in support of this axiom. This evidence we do not find satisfactory, in spirit communication; in psychic experiences; in hypnotic phenomena; and astral trips; important, and reliable as these many psychic research

About the Author
Dr. Alexander James McIvor-Tyndall was a colorful gentleman, noted to be “one of the most astounding workers ever to appear on the platform. His exhibition of mind-reading was spectacular. As a lecturer he has had few equals.” He and his wife both served the church in Lily Dale. It appears that at the same time his wife was Pastor of the Lily Dale Church, Dr. McIvor-Tyndall was Pastor of the First Spiritualist Church in Syracuse, NY, having been ordained by the National Spiritualist Association in 1923. Mr. and Mrs. McIvor-Tyndall often traveled to Florida during the winter months to serve Cassadaga Camp. The McIvor-Tyndall’s owned a home at 9 Buffalo St. and it was reported that he died in Lily Dale, NY on December 10, 1940.

This should be a school textbook

An honest, unbiased and refreshing look at a subject that we secretly hold inside us with very little understanding.
To help understand that other religions are no different, than what we are on the inside is well described by our authors.
That love is a universal force will be evidenced by the reader.
This would be an ideal school textbook used for spiritual guidence, to help understand that invisable sphere of immortality that dwells within and around us.
This concious awareness needs to be tought early in our lives not at the end, as it is now done by natural growth in ones wisdom.
A great narrative for the heart and soul.

Much broader scope than I expected

The book starts out with a description of illumination (enlightenment, nirvana, samadhi, etc.). Then goes on to discuss in individual chapters the environment, culture, upbringing, etc. of people such as Christ, Buddha, Mohammed, Whitman, Wordsworth, etc.. The summary at the end was more like preaching than a summary of the important points made in the book. All things considered I found this book useful in "connecting the dots".

Wonderful to read for an understanding of Ukraine

From pre-history to Independence in 1991, this book surveys the history of Ukraine and its people. It is unique in not only portraying the history of the Ukrainian people but also includes the other peoples who live or have lived in the land now known as Ukraine.
The organization of the book is chronological with 49 chapters divided into ten parts. Each part covers a significant period in Ukrainian history: Pre-Kievan Times; the Kievan Period; the Lithuanian-Polish Period; the Cossack State; the Hetmanate; Ukraine in the Russian Empire; Ukraine in the Austrian Empire; World War I; the Interwar Years; and, World War II & the Postwar Years. Forty-two black-and-white maps help illustrate the concepts described in the text. Also included are thirty-six textual inserts which provide lengthy quotes of important documents. Sometimes these feel redundant because the author has described so well the events highlighted by the inserted texts.
For readers to whom 700 pages of Ukrainian history is not enough and who want to learn more about specific events or periods described in this book, Magocsi provides a forty page bibliographic essay called: For Further Reading. One of the great stumbling blocks for English-speaking readers who want to learn Ukrainian history is the fact that so many Ukrainian sources have not been translated. A great feature of this bibliography is that the vast majority of the works listed are in English.
Ukrainian history is complex. This book, although daunting to read because of its size and depth of coverage, can help the student of Ukrainian history untangle the puzzles of Ukraine and its people. It is a great reference work that belongs in the library of anyone interested in the subject.

Excellent Reference on Ukrainian History

Mr. Magocsi's "History of Ukraine" often takes a second billing to Mr. Subtelny's "Ukraine: A History" - and I think, unfairly. Both have a lot to offer, and frankly, no passionate student of Ukrainain history should choose one over the other. He or she should get both. A wealth of information, and first rate scholarship are impressive. Mr. Magocsi has done a first rate job. Mychajlo Hrushevsky would approve of both, and we should too.

History of Ukraine and Sweeping Narrative of Eastern Europe

Ukraine has a unique history in that it is difficult to pinpoint when Ukraine emrged - from its Kieven Rus roots, under the rule of the Duchy of Lithuania and then the Commonwealth of Poland/Lithaunia and then split in half between Muscovy and Poland and all the while the Ottomans at their doorstep. But Magocsi does a great, non biased job of telling the story of Ukraine and the overlapping history of her neighbors and conquerors (Lithuania, Poland, Russia and others) up to the point of her independence. I love this book! Each chapter is about 10 pages or so long and not one page is wasted - each chaulk full of info and history leading up to the next chapter with an ominous warning or prediction of things to come. The book flows nicely and I could not put it down! Please add this book to your volumes of Eastern European History!

About the Author

Margo Gottlieb, Ph.D., is Co-founder and Lead Developer for WIDA at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin- Madison, having also served as Director, Assessment and Evaluation, for the Illinois Resource Center. She has contributed to the crafting of language proficiency/ development standards for American Samoa, Guam, TESOL, and WIDA and has designed assessments, curricular frameworks, and instructional assessment systems for language learners. Her professional experiences span from being an inner city language teacher to working with thousands of educators across states, school districts, publishing companies, governments, universities, and educational organizations.

Highlights of Margo’s career include being a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Chile and being appointed to the U.S. Department of Education’s Inaugural National Technical Advisory Council. In 2016 Margo was honored by TESOL International Association's 50@50 “as an individual who has made a significant contribution to the TESOL profession within the past 50 years.” She has had opportunities to travel extensively and has presented in American Samoa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Denmark, Finland, Guam, Italy, Jakarta, Mexico, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom as well as close to home across the United States.

Margo's publications include over 70 articles, technical reports, monographs, chapters, and encyclopedia entries. i thought this book was wonderful, one of the most fun additions to my gardening library in years. while i agree with the other reviewer that the writing is of a completely different style than most gardening books - it is very stream-of-consciousness and conversational - to me those were features, not bugs. i thoroughly enjoyed the discussions of the plants selected for this book, because they are all plants that i've been wanting to learn more about or to add to my garden but haven't seen this kind of dedication to their praises and attributes before. really, my only complaint is that it would have been great to have even more photographs of combinations and in-situ plant setups, but, hey, that is why there is pinterest.

Full of fresh and exciting planting ideas, especially for the colder zones

As an Iowa gardener, I was excited to see that Kelly Norris has published a new gardening book, “Plants with Style.” I greatly admired his book about irises that was published several years ago, I was happy to hear that he had been appointed as horticultural manager of the excitingly revitalized Des Moines Botanical Garden, and I heard him speak last year in Cedar Rapids (he was an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker).

Norris is a well-informed and enthusiastic gardener, and his new book reflects his extensive experience (even though he is a gardener only in his late 20s) as well as his boundless enthusiasm for plants and garden design. “Plants with Style” reads like an informal garden tour with a fervent young plant geek (he refers to himself as such), urging us to try our luck with the numerous new and unusual plants that he has run across in his career as a gardener and in his visits to numerous gardens of other plant enthusiasts. (Note: One of Norris’ goals is to make gardening more appealing to younger people, and sometimes his language can be conspicuously trendy, although he does tone down the hip-speak by the middle of the book).

“Plants with Style” is divided into five chapters: The first emphasizes planting what grows well in your own region – always good advice. The second covers trees, shrubs and structural plants that Norris believes should be more widely planted. Chapter Three mentions less well-known varieties of “emblem plants”: tulips in April, peonies and iris in May, etc., without which a garden misses the glories of the seasons. The fourth chapter covers the attributes that make garden vignettes successful: color, contrast and texture, and shows examples of interesting plants and combinations with these characteristics. And the final chapter discusses unusual plants that can add quirky interest to a garden.

In every chapter, I was pleased to learn about plants or varieties that were unknown to me, and I hope to be able to find some of them as they become more widely distributed – it’s books like this (and magazine articles) that are responsible for generating enough interest in newer plants for garden centers to start carrying them.

Photos are included for most of the plants he mentions, and although I would like to have seen more garden composition photos in the chapter about garden vignettes, the book is about specific recommended plants, not overall garden design, and the plant close-ups are sufficient.

It would have been useful if there had been an appendix with a chart listing the recommended plants, their size, growing conditions, hardiness, etc.

And on the topic of hardiness: One quibble I have is that Norris seems to be trying to appeal to gardeners in all regions of the United States (if such a book of planting recommendations is even possible), even though his own planting experience is limited to what will grow in Iowa. I understand that most garden writers have tried and failed to grow certain plants and still mention them in their books, based on others’ success, but it was still disappointing to me that some of the plants he mentions won’t grow here in the hardiness Zone 5 we share in common. Aren’t there already enough books about what will grow in Oregon? Norris should stick with his strengths and concentrate on what will grow in his own region – just as he advises us in Chapter 1.

But overall I found the book to be useful and full of fresh and exciting ideas – I’m inspired to try some new plants in my garden. I recommend “Planting with Style” to other gardeners who are interested in learning about lesser-known plants, particularly for gardeners in the colder zones of the Midwest and Northeast.

Plants to think about.

A well written book on garden plants. The photos are generally close up and on not on glossy paper, but show the plant reasonably well. No flower borders are shown. I have really enjoyed reading this new book in this New Year 2016, even though we are suffering a heat wave for our summer here in New Zealand.
I can easy recommend it to all gardeners.
