About the Author
Dan Abnett is the author of the Horus Heresy novels The Unremembered Empire, Know No Fear and Prospero Burns, the last two of which were both New York Times bestsellers. He has written almost fifty novels, including the acclaimed Gaunt's Ghosts series, and the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies. He scripted Macragge's Honour, the first Horus Heresy graphic novel, as well as numerous audio dramas and short stories set in the Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer universes. He lives and works in Maidstone, Kent.

Abnett is Gifted

I didn't like this book nearly as much as First & Only (or Eye of Terror), but it was still a fun read. I really got sucked in to the characters from the first book and wanted to follow their further exploits. While First & Only had a strong plot that held it together, this book is more of a collection of war stories. They read like they may have already appeared in Inferno! (the Warhammer fiction zine). I'm not a big fan of straight combat/action fiction, so this was somewhat disappointing. What saves it is the fact that Abnett is a truly great writer who really rises above this genre of game fiction. The war stories are interrupted by these almost poetic tableaus of the Tanith troops between battles: A soldier obsessively cleaning his gun, the MASH unit quiet and waiting for the coming onslaught of carnage, a General sharing coffee and small talk with the company cook. These bits are very effective counterpoint to the ferocious battles of the surrounding chapters.
I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next "Gaunt's Ghosts" book, I just hope that Abnett spends more time developing a compelling story arc and less time on the battlefield reportage.

A good sequel to Tanith First and Only

Dan Abnett follows up his first Gaunt's Ghosts novel --- Tanith First and Only --- with Ghostmaker and he does a good job to keep fans of the original hooked with the story. It doesn't rise above the original, but the characterization of major and secondary characters are explored abit further.

Ghostmaker also further explains the current Crusade campaign the regiment is on. Politics become an issue as well. Jealousy from other regiments with a more storied history helps add abit of a subplot to the main story. Gaunt and his men are put through the wringer as they accept missions or put into dangerous situations that slowly dwindle their numbers. This is sad and poignant for the fact that without a homeworld to call home anymore, they have no way of replenishing their regiment like other Imperial Guard units. This also means that for every Tanith who falls in battle, more of their homeworld and people's culture disappear. It really adds meaning to the title of Ghostmaker.

I would recommend this book to those who have read the first and still contemplating as to whether to pick up this sequel.

I don't know why people don't like this book, it's awesome!

This is the second book in the Gaunts Ghost series, and while it's not the best Ghost's book, it's still a five star book. With a huge number of different characters in the books, I think this was a great idea for the series. Dan abnett was able to give more dimension to the characters and there past, which he brought to life in First and only.
Yes, this book is pretty much a collection of short stories and each story focus's on a different character. I personally don't like short stories, but the way Ghostmarker was written was awesome. The thing I don't like short stories is there short! they don't leave any time for character development and in less then an hour they are done. In ghostmaker, the short stories were there to show the character, and show their past, and why they are so attached to it.
Gaunt's Ghost is one of my favorite series of novels, and Ghostmaker is a must read for any fan of warhammer 40k or military sci-fi.

Not what I had hoped for...

Although this text provides a wealth of American history, it does only an average job of providing the reader with true female perspective of that history. Students will struggle with how to properly study chapters for class testing. Some terms, like the use of "Indian" in regards to Native Americans, are antiquated. The reader is left with the feeling that women did not contribute enough to American history to merit a story outside of the male experience.

Excellent read for a college book!! It has interesting stories, pictures and examples of important dates and times in history. It was actually very fun to read. Highly recommend. This is one of the only text books throughout my college career that I plan on keeping.

About the Author

Elizabeth Driver is an editor and writer who has spent over twenty years researching the culinary history of Canada and Britain. She is fascinated by the history of food and an avid collector of cookbooks and antique kitchenware. Wonderful Sounding Recipes I'll start up the oven soon

I really like it. It's not a large book and has a soft binding so that it's easy to put in your purse and take with you. Because of the location of Canada they probably bake more during their extended cold weather. There's lots of hints and really educational things that I've never heard of and I worked in the school cafeteria (cook) for a couple of years way back when they didn't use fast food. I learned there the accuracy of weighing ingredients. A few of the recipes are weighed or some are a mixture of both weight and measure. These people offer lots of what I call 'pearls' when you're wanting a really good recipe. Five Roses is the brand of flour. I learned about 20 years ago (I'm now almost 70) that you need to use the type flour for the type of baking you're doing. This is also something fun to look into. I have yet to try any of the recipes but I'm going to order some of the flour tho it's a little pricey and give it a try. It's still a little hot here in OK. If you like to cook or should I say bake I think you would like this cook book.

I really wanted the french version of this book as my mother owned it for years. But I am just as happy to have an english version of this book. Bought a the same version for my mom since she lost her original french version. I remember the pancakes she made from this book. They are a treasured memory for me and my family

Simone Scarduzio Simone Scarduzio is a backend software engineer at MPme, a mobile music startup based at the heart of "silicon roundabout" in London. His current quest is to make the MPme music search and recommendation engine as feature-rich and snappy as possible. At MPme, it is a functional requirement for the core services to respond with a very low latency, regardless of the traffic. If this constraint were not respected, the system would send irrelevant recommendations to the clients. In terms of systems architecture, this means everything needs to scale horizontally. That's why, any mobile client connecting to MPme, actually connects to a Vert.x application. The use of Vert.x at MPme is massive and growing: reverse TCP proxies, Web radio monitors, and internal and external REST APIs are an example of this. He has been involved in the Vert.x project since October 2012, as an early adopter. Countless development versions of Vert.x have crossed MPme servers in a continuous cycle of build, test, deploy, and feedback to the Vert.x team. Before MPme, he lived for 3 years in Finland. Here, he cut his teeth as a software developer working on distributed mobile messages-processing systems at Mavenir, for customers such as Vodafone, Telefonica, Airtel, Idea, and T-Mobile. the shortest you can go, possibly

(disclaimer): As in other occasions, Packt invited me to review this book for them.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the capabilities of vert.x, which I had heard mentioned but had not dabbled in it yet. Vert.x is an actor-like (heard of the actor model? akka, etc?) for single-threaded event-driven concurrent web applications, quite similar to node.js, but with the twist of being also a polyglot framework; you can work in javascript, jython, jruby, groovy etc (did I mention it is for the JVM?)

The book is probably the shortest you can get to deliver a meaningful payload. However, Simone, the author, manages to show some useful recipes starting from the very basics. It is basically a longish tutorial that highlights the principal value propositions of the framework, guiding the reader from the installation to several complete code examples ( one of which, at least in my pdf, had a mistake, but not one that could prevent you from following along).

So, all in all, not enough knowledge to jump into a serious production project, but enough to play with the framework and maybe test it in your company or free time (I saw they have a bigger book on the topic).

If you already have experience with node.js, then getting to speed on vert.x is piece of cake, but if you are not familiar yet with the ever growing reactive programming, event driven paradigm and so on, then this book will give you a taste and you surely will be hungry for more.

I enjoyed the book but I am removing one star because I honestly think the price is a bit steep for 50 pages.

Let down by mistakes in commands and code examples.

There are a too many mistakes, such as:

sudo echo "export PATH=\$PATH:/opt/vertx/bin/" >> /etc/profile

on page 10, which gives an error: "bash: /etc/profile: Permission denied" due to the redirection not being done as root (sudo only gives root permissions to the execution of the binary, not the redirection of streams).

There is then a second mistake here, as in step three it makes a link to "/opt/vert.x", but here it uses "/opt/vertx/bin" as the path (note the mising dot).

If you know your way around Linux, you will get past these sorts of issues - but it does feel like sloppy editing.

The next error (if you're doing the Javascript track) is on page 13.

var vertx = require(vertx); / 1 /
var httpServer = vertx.createHttpServer(); / 2 /
httpServer.listen(8080, localhost); / 3 /

Here, line 1 needs to have quotes around "vertx" and line 3 needs quotes around "localhost" to make the code work.

At this point I gave up - code samples in a beginner's book need to be tested thoroughly.

I hope PACKT will fix these issues, as the general approach and tone of the book is good - it's just let down by a lack of testing.

Short and concise

This is a short book (54 pages). As the name suggests, you can read it in "an instant" and it gets you bootstrapped into the world of Vert.x.

I liked the style of the book: it is short and concise and after reading it, you have a good overview over Vert.x as an application platform and the programming model that comes along with Vert.x.

However I have to note that the Vert.x project has a very nice online documentation. In my opinion the book goes not beyond the information that is also available online.

The advantage of the book is, that it structures the information in an easily digestible way that you can read in chunks offline. However I would have hoped for more "in-depth" information or some "best practices" how to use Vert.x in real projects.

If you have never heard of Vert.x, I can fully recommend "Instant Vert.x". If you have already played with Vert.x the book is probably not for you.

Excellent book!! Clearly written with lots of code examples, complete github repository and solid reference for common features.

Want to thank the authors for an excellent written book. I had recently finished the multi tenancy book from ryan bigg and that was also a well written book so, i thought i would try this one as well. They do a good job of building out a ticket application using TDD and BDD, authentication using devise gem, styling using jquery, file uploading using carrierwave gem, tagging, sending email, deployment to heroku, designing an API, refactoring, and last chapter of rack-based applications which discusses mounting rack applications, middleware and using sinatra. The best part of the book is the github repository with 89 commits by chapter and sub chapter, that you can track your progress and if you get stuck you compare your latest commit with the authors and easy to find your mistake without googling for hours. 12/14/2015 - since i last read this book i have found i use it quite a bit as a reference. I used a sharpie on the cover and wrote down my favorite pages: github repo p.46, capybara p41, semantic styling p106, simple form p113, devise p149, admin-interface p171, pundit-roles p215, file upload-carrier wave p.284, testing JS-webdriver p284, Jquery p314, coffee script p320, tags p382, searcher p408, email p420, heroku p449, 12factors p452, amazon aws p453, fog p455, rails-12factor p456, puma p458, travis ci p462, maligun p465, rack p497.

Rails 4 In Action Saves your Bacon

Testing saves your bacon and this book saved my bacon. I just started coding Ruby & Rails 2-3 months ago and this book has been a god-send for helping me make my production apps legit. As the previous Kindle Reviewer mentioned, this book is a great reference manual for you as you continue your Rails Career. Sure, Rails 5 is out, but if you're a new developer, you may find that you're going to be maintaining a lot of legacy code, or maybe even still developing in Rails 3, 4 or heaven forbid Rails 2 or lower. This books is legit regardless, TDD & BDD al the way. I'm writing in Rails 5 and this book has still proved invaluable to me.

It is an incredible resource for them, because it divides discussions of children and divorce into age categories and discusses what children need at different ages. It also has chapters on dealing with anger effectively, co-parenting, and how to introduce new relationships to children.

A great story

When Sabrina receives a few boxes with her father's possessions she discovers something about him, an essential part of his life, that she didn't know anything about. Her father can't tell her much herself because he has memory problems. By asking the right questions and finding the right people to speak to Sabrina starts finding out more about her father. She finally has the chance to really get to know him and because of that she also discovers more about herself.

The Marble Collector is an interesting story about a man whose whole life evolved around marbles. I really like that idea and was intrigued as soon as I started reading. I loved the fact that Sabrina's father has something in his life that he's so passionate about. Only he's very secretive and that has influenced everyone around him has well. Marbles and secrets are the main topics of this book. An unusual combination, one that's a bit different. For me that worked really well, I was hooked from the start.

The Marble Collector is a great story and I loved reading it very much. It isn't fast-paced, in my opinion it's a book that needs to be savored slowly. The unusual topic together with the interesting main characters made me curious. I love reading about secrets and couldn't wait to find out more. The Marble Collector is also a story about family, about being passionate about something and about love. I liked that combination a lot.

Heartwarming and Engrossing!

I really liked this book.

It was a heartwarming story that engrossed you from the get go. And like most Cecilia Ahern's books it made you laugh, made you cry, and also made you cheer.

It has a wonderful cast of characters. Uses a past/present, back and forth, style to give depth into the father/daughter relationship between Sabrina and Fergus. And ultimately, it showcases the long-lasting effects secrets can have on those we love, and the importance of finding one's true identity for happiness.

I'm certainly glad I picked it up. It's definitely worth reading.

It was like doing a jigsaw and putting all the pieces together

I loved this book.The story was interesting and I really like it when each chapter is written from a different character's viewpoint - it's like doing a jigsaw puzzle and you have to put all the pieces together. I found the information about marbles quite fascinating - who would have thought there could be so many different types out there are how valuable some of them are. I've read quite a few Cecelia Ahern books and enjoyed them - this one was no exception - I always find it so easy to visualise the characters. 10 out of 10.

Originally from Cuba, Ali Vali has retained much of her family’s traditions and language and uses them frequently in her stories. Having her father read her stories and poetry before bed every night as a child infused her with a love of reading, which carries till today. In 2000, Ali decided to embark on a new path and started writing. She has discovered that living in Louisiana and running a non-profit provides plenty of material to draw from in creating her novels and short stories. Mixing imagination with different life experiences, she creates characters that are engaging to the reader on many levels. Entertaining Read

Short stories can be challenging. You need memorable characters, a plot which grabs the reader's interest and ends with a satisfactory resolution all in the space of a few normal chapters. The word count is your enemy and your friend. Novella's give the author a bit more time to develop their characters and plot but there are word count restraints forcing the writer to keep it simple yet hold the reader's interest.

Some authors go with characters they have used in the past, making their short story a 0.5 contribution to their continuing series. Others come up with entirely new characters and snapshots of time and place in their original tales. Entering into Girls with Guns I assumed that our leading ladies would be well armed. After that I was open to whatever these three seasoned authors would create for our reading pleasure.

Carsen Taite does not disappoint with Bow and Arrow. Her rough tough bounty hunter Luca Bennett is hot on the trail of rogue bad cop Teresa Perez. She is seeking revenge for both her girlfriend Jess and her own treatment at the hands of the now notorious drug runner. Luca has a Colt 45 and is not afraid to use it. Perez is also being hunted by the Mexican mafia she has double crossed. Just as Luca receives tips on possible Perez sitings she is called up for jury duty. Adapting to her new domestic arrangement with Jess, dealing with over eager juror Cris and tracking Perez keeps Bennett on the run. Add in Luca's loveable and well trained husky and Bow and Arrow is an entertaining fast paced read.

Michelle Grubb's Hammersmith is more novella than short story.
Belinda Reilly, recently assigned to the Hotstream task force is charged with protecting passengers riding the London Underground from urban terrorists. Her training and ability to blend with morning commuters allow her to spot potential suicide bombers or “cleaners”. Bel takes her new role and her Glock 17 very seriously. Nights of passion with her girlfriend Esther make her dangerous day job bearable.

I really enjoyed reading Hammersmith and appreciated the mini-course on suspect identification presented in entertaining fashion as Bel observes her fellow riders on their morning commute. Urban terrorism is our new reality and the city of London has experienced its share of violence. Fiction done well opens the possibilities that MI5 might just have highly trained squads of agents monitoring the CCTV and public transit riders on a daily basis. Grubb writes believable fiction. When background info ramps up to full blown tension the reader is pulled into the train with Bel. Foreshadowing made me feel like a super sleuth thinking I had everything figured out until the author threw in some unexpected twists and left me relegated to spectator status. Good fun.

Ali Vali's Hell Fire began with great promise. Finley Abbott is an FBI hacker on loan to the NYPD to help uncover a sex slave ring operating in the city. The stakes are raised when a group of sex slaves are gunned down and the massacre is witnessed by Abigail Eaton and her children. Finley is forced into protection duty as the eye witness to the slaying becomes a target.

The story is long relative to the others in this anthology and I think it had the makings of a entertaining full length romantic intrigue/ police procedural. As a novella it felt choppy and unfinished. Finley is an interesting character with a background only hinted at but slowly revealed. She is resourceful, brave and married to her job, perfect for the recently widowed Abigail and her children.

Hell Fire didn't work for me. It has an ambitious what if scenario but the story is poorly executed thanks I assume to the need to condense scenes to fit into a novella format. Like Orcs in Lord of the Rings, the bad guys are just too easy to kill. We don't have enough time to get to know key people in the story and threads and threats are left hanging without resolution. I did like the relationship between Abigail, her kids and Finley. Their scenes were highlights and kept me interested and reading. Fin's weapon of choice in the final scene was straight out of a gangster movie and more cringe-worthy than clever.

Like most anthologies, Girls with Guns has stories I loved and stories which were okay. A nice mix.

I received a copy of this book from Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this anthology. Each of the three stories dealt with law and order, as well as the criminally inclined, but each also exposed a softer side to characters who could've been hardened by what they've seen and experienced. It also showcased each author's style, and while different, the three stories seemed very complementary to me.
The first story was Bow and Arrow by Carsen Taite. I don't think I've read anything by her before, although I keep hovering over that "buy" button. I'm not sure I actually liked Luca. Although she genuinely seemed to love Jess, she struggles to allow herself to be vulnerable, even seeing the admission of feelings to be somehow weak. Her feeling that being in a relationship, even one she likes and doesn't want to give up, somehow makes her soft, leads her to make choices that could cause her trouble in that relationship down the road. I did, however, love her declaration for Valentine's Day at the end. This will probably get me to actually click that button the next time I'm looking for a good read.
Next is Hammersmith by Michelle Grubb. Bel and Esther have a very amorphous relationship, and it's one that makes me question whether Bel really knew Esther much at all. That totally plays into what happens at Bel's job one day, looking for threats to public safety on the London Underground. Grubb definitely had me wondering the whole story, and I definitely didn't see the twist coming, so kudos to Ms. Grubb for a wonderfully suspenseful tale.
Last is Ali Vali's Hell Fire. A lot seems to happen in a very short time for Abigail and her kids, and the only safe port in this storm seems to be Finley, who's stepped forward to keep the small family safe and alive. In her quest to find out who has targeted Abigail, Finley gets closer and closer to the brave woman and her children, but Finley has a past of her own, a past that her law enforcement employers might have a problem with. Can Finley use that part of her life to help Abigail? And if so, at what cost? Definitely an interesting read, and it reminds me that I need to go finish Cain Casey's series.
So, strong female characters, who know how to use a gun and who know that justice and law sometimes don't go together, make this three story anthology a great read for anyone who loves crime stories. Definitely a good addition to anybody's library.

Kick-ass women, thrills, and sexy scenes

If you’re unfamiliar with their work (or even if you aren’t, and you just need a fix!), Girls With Guns is a great introduction to the work and worlds of Michelle Grubb, Carsen Taite, and Ali Vali.

In Carsen Taite’s Bow and Arrow, we meet a bounty hunter by the name of Luca Bennett. I have to admit, I didn’t like Luca right away. She seemed determined to do the wrong thing just to do it, and had a bad streak half-a-mile wide. But as the story progressed, I saw that Luca was more than a bounty hunter shirking responsibility for cash: she was on a mission close to her heart. Add in one really adorable dog and a stint in jury duty, and this was a great story.

If I had to describe Hammersmith by Michelle Grubb in one word, I’d use passionate. Officer Belinda Riley is on the trail of a suicide bomber, and the ugly feeling in her gut tells her the culprit is closer than anyone thinks. With a healthy dash of sex and adrenaline, this story hits the mark.

Though I liked them all, Hell Fire was my favorite of these three stories. Finley Abbott is one Special Agent I want to get to know better! When she risked everything to save the life and family of naive but courageous Dr. Abigail Eaton, I melted. As the story progressed, I couldn’t believe how deep the evil of the sex trafficking empire went – and who was behind it all.
