The author goes to great explains the why

An extremely well written and knowledgeable introduction to the world of linear algebra. The strength of the book is how simplistic and precise it explains the elementary concepts of linear algebra. The book has no proofs, instead the author focuses on the application of linear algebra to solve problems. The author goes to great explains the why. The why meaning why do we preform this operation this way or what is the use this procedure. Matrices are introduced fairly early while vectors come into play in chapter 3. It is more geared towards engineers and physicist than mathematicians.
Proofs are omitted in this book. Which can be a let down for some math majors. I am a math major and yet the book having no proofs is not a let down. This book is best used to learn the computational aspects of basic linear algebra, then moving on to a linear algebra book to develop the proofs.
Shields book is leaps and bounds better than Gilberts Strangs intro book. Gilbert Strangs book is extremely wordy, often leaves material out to do in later exercises with no answers, and the wording of the problems can be ambiguous.
All in all this one of the better math books I have worked from. I would put it in the league of kisselev geometry, spivak calculus, and cohen pre-calculus. I'm looking forward to try Paul C. Shields Linear Algebra.
