Vital and valuable book for pastors/worship leaders/curators/laity

Mark Pierson doesn't just talk about what it is to curate worship. This well written and thorough book blends theory, theology, practical advice, ideas, examples and challenges in a very humble and vulnerably honest way.

It is a very personal book, written by a very wise and intuitive man of God. He shares thoughtful stories illuminating the process of creating significant, transformative worship experiences. He asks critical questions. He leaves room for exploration, imagination and reflection.

Mark has written this book the same way he would curate a worship event that allows the participant to encounter and draw into a deeper relationship with God. This book is Christocentric. It is inspiring, encouraging and will have a profound effect on your ministry.

Every church leader, pastor, worship leader/curator, and church member that aspires to participate in an authentic community of Christ should read this book.

A New Language for Designing Worship

I have heard many question our current worship vocabulary and cry out for a new language that helps us better reflect the glory of God. Mark offers a new approach to leading worship and without using elitist language or ideas that are bound to one particular style. If you are a pastor, musician, technician, artist, VJ, volunteer or anyone involved in leading worship gatherings, this book is a must read.

As one who focuses on the visual layer of worship events, I really connected with Mark's thought on being a "maker of context" rather than just a "presenter of content". There is so much more to leading worship than singing songs from a stage and running slides with pretty backgrounds! This book has given me a new framework for creativity and has opened my eyes to new possibilities for worship.

Not only is this one of the most amazing books I have ever read, but I know Mark personally, and he has become one of my favorite people ever. He is an amazing friend and mentor!

The Art of Curating Stations

2010 has been a Sparkhouse year. Sparkhouse is an imprint of Augsburg Fortress, and this past year they have published some stellar resources, including my personal favorite, re:form, a confirmation curriculum (they also published a great VBS we used this summer, re:new, and a book on Church in the Inventive Age by Doug Pagitt). I actually think the re:form confirmation curriculum is the best confirmation curriculum I've seen, ever!

When I learned they were also working on a new resource for worship planning (Clayfire), I was thrilled, and immediately ordered the book that I think is launching the series, Mark Pierson's The Art of Curating Worship.

All of this is by way of saying that I was predisposed to be sympathetic to the book, and open to the ideas in it. I'm honestly a fan of resources published by Augsburg Fortress, and a supporter of the innovative directions Sparkhouse is taking as a publishing arm of our church.

So then I actually started reading the book. Here's where I started hitting some major speed-bumps. I am still excited about Pierson's re-thinking worship leadership as worship curation, because it bring greater focus to the environment and space in which worship takes place than other traditional titles such as cantor, preacher, presider, or worship leader. Cantors focus more on the music, preachers on the word, presiders on space but focused on the meal, and worship leaders also typically focus on the content of prayers and music.

The term curator is preferable for a variety of reasons, itemized well in Pierson's book, but I especially like the term because it draws attention to the overall environment, and also has analogies with how curation is done in museums, etc, where the goal is to bring to life that which has gone before.

All of this being said, I realized that as soon as I read two things in the book that really caused me to struggle, I wouldn't be able to read the book with an open heart and mind. Pierson shares in the second chapter of his book that one worship event he curated included communion, but he chose to use water instead of wine for the communion. Is it too finicky of me, or too legalistic, to argue that you simply don't do this, period, anywhere. Communion is bread and wine. To depart from bread and wine is simply not acceptable.

This pointed me back to something he had said earlier that I initially thought was a bit of hyperbole, but now I think it wasn't. Page 25, he says, "Anything goes." Of course, he precedes this by arguing that once we get our definition of church and worship clear, then how we actually design worship, embedded in those answers, can be "anything goes," but it is simply not clear to me how that works.

Here's my concern. T'his book is the first book on worship from a new publishing arm of the Lutheran church, and one of the first if only comments in the book on the sacraments suggests that wine may be replaced with water in the meal.

Now I know that Pierson is a Baptist from New Zealand. We probably have very different approaches to the meal. I also see from what he is up to that he is very creative and experimental in his worship leadership. He creates events, art installations, etc. They seem amazing, and I'd like to see such a worship event in action.

That being said, I just don't see how the book will ultimately be helpful for our worship leaders. This is more than simply thinking outside the box. It's like having left the room and apartment building altogether.

I'm going to continue reading the book, and will post a second reflection upon finishing it, but it does occur to me that we need someone to write a book on worship curation who also reads and adheres to the Lutheran confessions and the Use of the Means of Grace document, among other guiding texts of our tradition.

They say all press is good press, so I hope you'll go out and buy the book and read it. Even if I strongly disagree with parts of it, and disagree even more strongly with the decision that Sparkhouse should be the one to publish it, I do intend to always be in dialogue perhaps especially with those with whom I disagree. The true way to stay immature is to live in an echo-chamber of your own creation.

Final rescue

I bought this book in error, thinking it was the same as the 556-page Final Report based on the work of the Oklahoma Bombing Investigation Committee, and funded by private citizens.

But this volume was written by city rescue officials in Oklahoma City. It focuses on the heroic rescue operations conducted afterward, in minute detail.

To its credit, the book gives a huge amount of information about effects of the explosion, the number of people trapped inside, the number of people rescued, by what time and date, the locations and numbers of rescuers, and so on. This will be useful and interesting to anyone honoring those who risked their lives to save others.

This book is valuable in its own right. It honors the dead, and those who worked to save the living. It's certainly a good companion to Key's Final Report. It's also useful for readers interested in coordinating data available on the attack.

But it doesn't examine questions about perpetrators, motives, and investigations concerning the attacks, all of which still need a lot more answers.

If you are ready to awaken spiritually, read this!

This book breaks down the awakening process in such a basic way that I had goosebumps while reading it. The author's ability to explain to the reader exactly what is needed to awaken is something that I have longed for, but not been able to find, in many other spiritual awakening books. If you are ready, this book will show you the way!

This is one of the best books I've ever read on awakening/ enlightenment. The author's direct, clear style of writing leaves you with clarity of an awakened path. His description of the ego ~ and the power of the Divinity within.. totally resonated for me. If you are on a spiritual path or considering answering the 'call' ..this book is for you. It'll give guidance and clarity to anyone who takes the journey of awakening.

About the Author
Paul Schumaker is Professor of Political Science at the University of Kansas, where he has taught courses in political theory and community politics since 1972. Dr. Schumaker has authored several books on political theory, including Critical Pluralism, Democratic Performance, and Community Power (1991).

An introductory taste to a broad complex topic

For those seeking an introduction to political theory and wishing to read excerpts of the relevant primary texts, "The Political Theory Reader" offers a fine choice. The editor, Paul Schumaker, has compiled a selection ranging over much of the history of the topic, complete with excellent introductory essays. Unfortunately, he tends to favor the period from the Enlightenment to the present day, which seems a slight on foundational thinkers such as Aristotle and Plato, whose basic argument we continue to play out every day on 24 hour news channels. He also gives short shrift to the relevant medievalists, but I suppose choices must be made.

As with all such collections, this one offers at best a taste of political theory's intellectual richness and I would say the editor did the reader no favor by organizing the volume by topic rather than chronology, but this is perhaps an individual bias. Hopefully, interested readers who pick the book up will feel compelled to read on and grapple with history's greatest thinkers, rather than thinking they can gain a serious understanding by perusing snippets. One word of warning, readers may note the relative brevity of this book given its topic; between a small font and two columns of text per page, some young readers will still find themselves reaching for a magnifying glass.

Required reading by the author and professor at KU.

Pretty comphrehensive but since the author was the teacher who required me to use this book at KU....you had to watch out for poltical bias and he has plenty. We had a few open arguments on campus. A lot of information but be careful of that bias again. The professor tends to dismiss those he disagrees without much in the way of explanation (conservatives, the Tea Party, Reaganites, etc.) and plays up very slightly those that he tends to agree with. A good book but keep some salt around.

Interesting, but hard to read

Very interesting book, and I'm enjoying the class I'm taking with it. The information is superb, but it includes many very long sentences that make it difficult to read sometimes. Plan a lot of time for reading if you're using this book for a class.

Like Reading the Story of My Life

In the past two years I have developed several serious health conditions. I am not one to simply buy into the traditional western medicine tract and I have explored other avenues of healing. However, I still suffer. I stumbled across this author and her work through a google search and I bought this book immediately. I started with the most serious disease I am suffering from and followed a trail through all of my ailments and it was like reading my autobiography. I am now embarking on hard part - doing the work necessary to heal myself. I am SO grateful to have found this book.

One word of caution. If you turn to this book and think you are going to find a quick or miraculous cure...you are right and also wrong. You'll learn what is causing your health issue, but then the work is up to you. The cure is simple, but achieving it takes work. I'm ready for it.

My Go-to Manual For Dis-ease

Love this book and refer to it often. It has really brought awareness to how the body reacts to us metaphysically. I have found that once I can recognize the reason for my dis-ease it is easier to work through issues and resolve the pain and discomfort.

Great reference book!!!

After studying various ways of healing I can say that is a great reference book. I believe the whole goal is to remind us that we can heal ourselves and our body is there to tell us what is going on. It's a matter of taking time to pay attention.

Not everything in the book does apply because we are all different in our thinking. But a lot of the information was on the ball. When I reflect back on some of the ailments I had as child such as acne or toothaches she was on point. It made so much sense to me and when things are going on in my life I go to this book and it helps me slow down to reflect and heal more internally. It's a great starting point for anyone who is learning to take a more natural and holistic way of healing. Just a few things:

1)What I've been taught over the years is that your language can dictate the creation of dis-ease. "That guy is a pain in the neck." Later in life you have serious neck pain.
2)I recommend looking up New German Medicine. Ms. Bourbeau does reference Dr. Hammer in the beginning of the book. There are some great youtube videos that talks of his work and will only compliment this book.
3)This is not a book of quick fixes but is very powerful if one takes the time to discern how they arrived at the dis-ease.

So if your someone who is a counselor or one who wants something more holistic then buy this book. I'm grateful to Ms. Bourbeau for her years of hard work in creating this book. It's a great tool for healing.

**Update. It's now 2011. I noticed a review that mentioned that this book is redundant. I think they are missing the point. I finally realized, all dis-ease is a result of you disconnecting with Source, God, Spirit (however you choose to label it). Meaning all dis-ease relates back to a fear. You can label it with anger, hurt, sadness, worry etc. Bottom line is you need to release it to heal it. It's simple. But we as a physical (and amazing) Human Race love to over complicate this life. How you choose to release the fear takes some growing and discerning on your part. This book is a tool. You are the only one that can do the work. You are the fix to your problems and challenges. No amount of explanation or theory will tell you otherwise. I personally like repetition. It's the mother of all learning, right?

We live in a complex world. We label life with our enriched languages and experiences. The goal here is to truly love yourself. If we weren't such a complex race we probably wouldn't need this book. The truth of the matter is you and only you can unravel the truth that leads you back to healing, your heart, alignment and a purposeful life.

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly: these are adjectives which describe my reading of Dr. Glenn Siniscalchi’s effort to restore apologetics to its proper place in Catholic life.

Siniscalchi’s book is wonderfully succinct, the 274 easy-to-read pages covering major aspects of Thomistic thought on belief in God, the significant contribution which Christianity brought to a pagan world (that every human life is worthy of respect), the importance of using one’s intellect to affirm faith, and the rationality of belief in a benevolent God Who wishes not only to communicate with His creatures, but also to offer them eternal life.

Thoroughly footnoted with a twelve-page bibliography to encourage further reading, Siniscalchi’s book is scholarly yet designed for popular reading, as the divisions into five parts and fifteen chapters suggest. Thus, the book is a one-stop course in a variety of disciplines. The cultural significance of Catholic Christianity—specifically of the crucial role that Catholic institutions such as charities, hospitals, and universities have played over the past two millennia—is simply inspiring and makes one proud to be part of a universal faith based, not on terror or pessimism, but love and hope.

Catholic Christians of any rite (Byzantine, Melkite, Maronite, Roman, etc.) have always appreciated the inherent beauty of the faith. What impresses the reader on finishing Siniscalchi’s book is how logical the Catholic faith is. Siniscalchi destroys atheist claims skillfully and with grace; after all, as he mentions several times, apologetics involves not merely pointing out another’s errors, but doing so in an appropriate and Christ-like manner.

Siniscalchi is a master of identifying logical fallacies in atheist or heterodox opinions, and he addresses those errors in thinking without engaging in ad hominem attacks. The reader can easily understand the deep philosophical ideas being presented because Siniscalchi’s style is, as affirmed above, cogent and lucid, flowing smoothly from one idea to the next (the meaning of the adjective “mellifluous”).
It is no wonder, then, that virtually every page of my copy has been marked with an annotation of something important to remember, something worthy of future discussion, or something simply interesting to investigate in the future.

Two areas in the book’s production need to be addressed. The second edition should correct some annoying typographic errors. Also, although the content of the fifteen chapters is evident from their titles, an index should be created to assist the reader in locating specific terms quickly.

These minor matters aside, I highly recommend Siniscalchi’s work for all, especially high school and college students. In fact, I can see how this book can be the basis for a series of broadcasts on EWTN, videos on YouTube, or a masterly online course (one chapter each week in a fifteen-week course). Siniscalchi should pursue these opportunities to promote his excellent work.

Don't have time to read St. Thomas Aquinas’ massive works? Can’t get to the entire body of Vatican II documents? Don’t have the energy or the eyesight to plow through the Catholic Encyclopedia? Read Siniscalchi’s book instead. A subtitle for the book could be “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Faith but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship

Dr. Siniscalchi's book is an important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship. In Retrieving Apologetics, he argues convincingly for a post-Vatican II role for apologetics, using both papal encyclicals and the documents of the council itself. Vatican II did not obviate the need for apologetics, as some Catholics mistakenly think. Rather, Vatican II opened up new apologetic methods. The council, while breaking the monopoly of the Neo-Scholastic classical method on Catholic apologetics, nevertheless affirmed the classical method's validity in its own sphere of competence. This argument comprises the first part of Siniscalchi's book.

The rest of the book is devoted to updating that classical method to meet the challenges of today. It is here where Siniscalchi particularly shines. Before one can begin to make the case for the truth of the Catholic faith, Siniscalchi rightly argues, apologists must first defend the notion of objective truth against the claims of postmodern relativism. He then updates several Thomistic arguments for God's existence, defending them against the particular challenges of today. He corrects many of the Neo-Scholastic errors in their defense of Christianity - rather than arguing for the truth of Christianity based on an outdated notion of historical reliability of the Gospels, Siniscalchi argues that, based on the totality of the evidence (accepted as evidence by both Catholics and non-believers alike), the hypothesis that Christianity is true outstrips the claims of rival hypotheses that would see Christianity as false. Siniscalchi also develops the relevance of the Catholic faith, especially the via empirica, as a method for defending the truth of Catholicism.

Perhaps the best thing about Retrieving Apologetics, and Sinischalchi's work as a whole, is that, while his passion for the subject is evident, he is unflinchingly fair and charitable. As a scholar, he embodies the Vatican II vision that sees ecumenical dialogue and apologetics as not incompatible. As Siniscalchi himself points out, authentic dialogue requires its participants to seek the truth, not gloss over differences.

Two paws up!

Thirteen-year-old Allison Elizabeth Morris, aka Ali, has hit an awkward point in her life, complete with a wide array of "almosts." She's almost fourteen. She's almost a freshman in high school. She's almost running her own business. But, as the saying goes, "almost doesn't count." Which is why Ali is stuck in neutral, attempting to clamber her way through life until her "almosts" become a reality. Luckily, one "almost" has managed to do just that. After suggesting to her mother, the owner of Perfect Paws - a dog-grooming salon - that they should offer a daycare for pups, she agrees to open one under the condition that Ali spend her summer keeping an eye on all of the slobbering charges that walk through the front door. Ali is only too thrilled to agree to this condition. After all, she can't imagine spending her summer doing anything but roughing it with some furry canines. And, now that her best friend Shan Chan has been forced to spend the summer with her grandparents in San Francisco, Ali knows that the hot, sticky days are sure to go by uber-slowly, unless she can find something fun to do, and this is it! Everything starts off smoothly. The dogs are getting along perfectly, the sun is shining, there's dog chow in the air. Then Ali's worst nightmare walks through the door with her pampered pooch, Tallulah, and everything goes all wrong. Megan "the Mega-Snob" Fitzmartin is the princess of James Madison Middle School, and absolutely perfect. She's also Ali's arch-nemesis, and an individual who sets out to ruin the life of anyone she doesn't "care" for. Oddly enough, not only does Megan's dog share her taste in clothes, but her personality, as well. Tallulah causes a handful of problems at Perfect Paws, leaving Megan threatening to ruin Ali's daycare business. However, Ali's run-in with a handsome new stranger named Jack McKenna has her head in the clouds, and Megan's threats do little to leave her shaking. Ali has never felt so strongly about a boy before, and can't help but find herself fantasizing about kissing Jack. The fact that he loves animals, and has an adorable dog of his own named Barkley doesn't help matters any. Ali wants nothing more than to tell Jack how she's feeling, or for him to ask her out on a date. Unfortunately, Megan has already begun to sink her claws into him, inviting him to amusement parks, sitting with him at the local country club's Family Frolic day, and inviting him to join the Youth Committee, who just happen to be organizing the Fourth of July dance. Ali instantly knows that she can't compete with Megan. After all, where Megan is girly, skinny, gorgeous, confident, and...all around perfect. Ali is a tomboy, athletic, and always happens to have a smudge of dirt on her face. It's obvious that, next to Megan, Jack would undoubtedly ignore Ali, and focus all of his attention on the resident cutie. Still, Ali can't help but feel that there's some sort of connection between her and Jack. But, without Shan there to talk it over with, Ali finds herself caught in the middle of two very strong feelings - liking and loathing Jack. Now, she'll have to pinpoint the truth, or be left out in the doghouse while everyone else is inside having fun.

TRUST ME made me giggle, THE BOYFRIEND TRICK made me grin, so there was no question that I would adore Jenny Collins' PUPPY LOVE. While each of the aforementioned novels are by different authors, they are all a part of the FIRST KISSES series, which has quickly made an impression upon me. As opposed to featuring overly-descriptive romantic scenes, or downright crude language, like so many books on the tween/teen market these days, the FIRST KISSES series manages to present an adorable array of tales revolving around first romance, in a way that keeps it clean, and provides wholesome entertainment for tweens, as well as their older sis. Jenny Collins' PUPPY LOVE is no exception. In the same fashion as Hawthorne's TRUST ME and Davis' THE BOYFRIEND TRICK, Collins has penned an adorable tale of first love that will most certainly appeal to animal lovers. Ali's no-frills appearance, and feelings of confusion are completely relatable, and truly make her a lovable character. Her ability to stick up for herself in any situation shows that she has confidence deep down inside her soul; while her compassion towards the four-legged species is enjoyable to read about, presenting a cast of furry characters who are memorable and adorable from beginning to end. Ali's relationship with her parents is fun to read about, as they entrust her with so much independence and responsibility, as opposed to trying to hold her back, and keep her under lock and key. The independence and responsibility bestowed upon her only works to make Ali appear more mature, and less childish - except when it comes to Jack and Megan. The mix-ups, and debacles Ali gets herself into throughout PUPPY LOVE are hilarious, and the fact that her embarrassment always takes place in front of the guy she's crushing on couldn't be more true-to-life. An enjoyable, can't-put-down read. Two paws up!

Allie can't believe her luck. This summer she gets to do the one thing she loves the most, be around dogs.

It works out great, especially since Allie's mother owns a dog grooming shop. With a little mention of starting up a doggy day care, Allie is officially a dog-sitter in the shop, and she gets paid for it.

Being in charge of a doggy day care sure does has its benefits, like being able to see the new guy in town, Jack, who just so happens to love dogs and decides to let his own dog, Barkley, stay at the day care. But his sweetness towards the dogs and very attractive looks just doesn't excuse how much of a jerk-boy he is.

Of course there is always company that isn't really wanted, and for Allie it's Megan, the very rich and very snobby girl who happens to have one of the meanest and most unfriendly poodles around, Tallulah. It's bad enough that Megan just can't keep her paws off of Jack, but also owning a dog who happens to pick on other dogs is just so inexcusable for Allie.

But why is it that this sometimes nice jerk-boy, Jack, is becoming more interested in Megan then he is in Allie? And why is it that whenever Allie is with a pack of dogs in public, something has to go terribly wrong? Allie just doesn't know why everything bad has to happen to her. But maybe, just maybe, there is still a chance for Allie to make everything she ever dreamed of officially work out -- like her first kiss.

Another great addition to the FIRST KISSES line of books, PUPPY LOVE is both charming and satisfying. The interaction between Allie and Jack is what makes this book worth reading, since they will make you believe that anyone can find the perfect person for their first kiss.

Dogs are the most important thing in the world to Ali. When walking her dog one day she meets Berkley a springer spaniel who belongs to an arrogant guy named Jack. Just when he seems like an ok guy she finds out that he's dating Megan who is the biggest snob in the world. She falls hard on for an unattainable guy. Sigh.
How can she show Jack that she is the one for him?
