Review

"The material is set out in a highly structured, modular, form so is easy to use as a student's reference book as well as an introduction to linguistics, ranging from simple definitions to advanced conceptualisations."

Language Today

From the Back Cover

Contemporary Linguistics : an introduction is a comprehensive, fully up-to-date introduction to linguistics. The book covers not only how language is structured, but also how it functions both socially and culturally, and how it is acquired and processed by speakers. It will prepare students to go on to more advanced work and, at the same time, will serve as a basic reference that students can continue to consult throughout their studies.

The text explores all the core areas of linguistics as well as numerous interdisciplinary and related areas.

  • Core topics covered include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, the genetic and typological classification of the languages of the world, and historical linguistics.
  • Interdisciplinary areas discussed include language and the brain, psycholinguistics - the study of language processing, first and second language acquistion, language in social contexts and the fast-growing area of computational linguistics.
  • Related areas explored include writing systems and animal communication.

A modular arrangement of the material facilitates the use of the book in courses at varying levels, and with differing emphasis. Each chapter contains basic information - so prior knowledge of the subject is not a prerequisite. However, many chapters include additional material which is flagged as 'advanced', to provide scope and challenge for those readers who wish to take the study further. Each chapter also contains clearly defined headings, a summary and an up-to-date bibliography. Hints which provide a valuable aid for solving analytical problems are included in the appendices, together with end-of-chapter exercises which allow the reader to learn by actually 'doing linguistics'. A detailed glossary of terms enables readers to check definitions and a language index (as well as a standard subject index) are provided at the back of the book.

Originally co-edited by William O'Grady and Michael Dobrovolsky, with contributions from other leading scholars, and published in Canada, this major textbook has beenfully adapted and updated by Francis Katamba for use in Britain and the rest of the world outside North America.

Contemporary Linguistics can be used from first year through to final year as a main text for students taking degree courses in linguistics, English language and cognitive science and by MA students on TEFL courses. It is also highly suitable for students taking language options in media and cultural studies modern language, psychology and philosophy, as well as for speech therapy courses.

William O' Grady is Professor of Linguistics and Graduate Chair in the Department of Linguisitics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and Michael Dobrovolsky is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Calgary. Francis Katamba is a Reader in Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics and Modern English Language at Lancaster University. Loved the English setting!
By Sherrill O.
This was better than a "locked room" mystery. The supporting characters are a lot of fun and Judith and Renie are at their best.

The Cousins Go to England
By Karen Potts
Accompanying their husbands on a trip to England, Judith and Renie look forward to spending time with a former pen pal's family. They are invited to an old country manor while their husbands take a fishing trip to Scotland. The owner of the estate is Aunt Petulia, a 90-something dowager who controls and bullies her family with the promise of the considerable inheritance which will go to the favored relative upon her death. When Aunt Petulia is poisoned with chocolate candy, there are many suspects among her greedy heirs. Wills appear and disappear and it is unclear as to who is to inherit her fortune. There are several skeletons in the family closet, including illegitimate children and runaway teenagers. Judith and Renie are led a merry chase trying to discover the identity of the killer. When they find out who the killer is, they are almost the next victims. This is another enjoyable "cozy" from author Judy Dahiem, with the added attraction of having England as the background.

European-American Relations and the Middle East: From Suez to IraqFrom Routledge

This book examines the evolution of European-American relations with the Middle East since 1945.

Placing the current transatlantic debates on the Middle East into a broader context, this work analyses how, why, and to what extent European and US roles, interests, threat perceptions, and policy attitudes in the region have changed, relating to both the region as a whole and the two main issues analysed: Gulf Security and the Arab-Israeli Conflict. The contributors then go on to discuss the implications of these developments for Western policymaking.

The volume makes four key contributions. First, it examines the subject matter from a truly transatlantic perspective, with all chapters adopting a bi- or multilateral approach, taking into account the views from both the US and individual European countries or the EC/EU collectively. Second, the book takes a long-term view, covering a series of crises and developments over the past six decades. Third, it has a systematic structure, with the predominantly chronological order of the chapters being geared towards depicting trends and evolutions with regard to the key themes of the book. Finally, the book builds bridges between historians and political scientists/analysts, as well as between experts of transatlantic relations and Middle East scholars.

This book will be of great interest to students of transatlantic relations, the Middle East, US foreign policy, European politics, international history and IR in general.

shabby rehash of 2011 version, also out of date already since 2012
By Michael montyman
Many things have changed in Myanmar since so called "Democracy" and since the 2010 elections many places have been opened up to travellers and tourists previously inaccessible before 2012 (unless with expensive govt guide driver and permits etc,) as the country suddenly filled with tourists who previously would not go because of UN sanctions etc , However the NEW 2014 lonely planet guide is just a rehash of the poorly updated 2011 version and a shameful discredit to its author Simon Richmonds reputation . Burma /Myanmar is now become open to backpackers ie overland entry and exit via Kawthung and Maesot . Also overland exit via chin district to India previously unattainable by local bus. Also Mrauk is now accessible by local bus via Ann denied previously. All these points have been igbnored and overlooked in this allegedly updated version and backpackers are still recommended in the guide to follow old prior to democracy routes ie flying and long boat journeys. The book glosses over the plight and genocide of the Rohyngha and is at best just a rehash of the very poor 2011 version. Lonelyplanet and the author Simon Richmond should be ashamed of their lack of principles and efforts in areas where the backpacker will be dissappointed if he/she takes their advice on areas they suggest ie ‘still you can only fly’, whereas those of us who love Myanmar and its people grab these opportunities to head into previously uncharted territory whilst this guide book and its lack of research by the author shows disresepct for those backpackers who are its target, although I personally think its aimed at upmarket accommodation for the "Flashpacker" (see kalow) and yet still sends the naive and trusting backpacker into places noted for their cheating tourists, like Golden Lilly in Kalow etc It lacks research and also lacks important changes in travel within Myanmar as with Mrauk U chin state and Myiktyna etc etc although with hindsight it took 7 years for them to acknowledge Sein Sein in Bhamo as best restaurant, something Stefan loose guide book on Myanmar acknowledged years before and I personally found by accident . Sorry but out of date and disrespectful to those who want a valuable updated guide to this beautiful country. Suggest Lonely planet do a recall and properly update the important changes before the release of the paper back version this month until then use other sources or second hand older version

Lacking in breadth and depth, but Ok for the casual/first time visitor.
By Giles Peach
While I didn't expect it to have the same breadth of regions/sights as say, Thailand. I was also disappointed with the depth of those areas that are covered.
I'm a frequent traveller to Myanmar and have found both this and the 2 previous editions only semi-useful. This most recent edition definitely feels like it was thrown together just so they could say that they had made an update. Other than a few newer hotels in major destinations, there wasn't that much else put in it seems.
Having said that, if your're just going to the main tourist areas such as Bagan, Inle, Yangon, etc, this will provide you with plenty of things to see and places to stay. If you're really wanting to scratch beneath the surface and get off the beaten track, you're much better off speaking with the undeniably friendly and helpful locals.

The Best Available...Though Far from Great
By Yoby
Certainly more useful than any other book out there, but Lonely Planet continues to disappoint. Chapters are arranged in illogical order, map legends appear on the pages after the map and someone needs to seriously vet the "highlighted" hotels and restaurants. I found many superior lodgings and eateries with better prices just by walking the streets for a few minutes. I long for the days when Rough Guides regularly published guides in book format, but until they return, Lonely Planet is your best bet. Indispensable if you are travelling independently to Myanmar.

The Long Exile: A Tale of Inuit Betrayal and Survival in the High Arctic, by Melanie McGrath

In 1922 an Irish-American adventurer named Robert Flaherty made a film about Inuit life in the Arctic. Nanook of the North featured a mythical Eskimo hunter who lived in an igloo with his family in a frozen Eden. Nanook’s story captured the world’s imagination.

Thirty years later, the Canadian government forcibly relocated three dozen Inuit from the east coast of Hudson Bay to a region of the high artic that was 1,200 miles farther north. Hailing from a land rich in caribou and arctic foxes, whales and seals, pink saxifrage and heather, the Inuit’s destination was Ellesmere Island, an arid and desolate landscape of shale and ice virtually devoid of life. The most northerly landmass on the planet, Ellesmere is blanketed in darkness for four months of the year. There the exiles were left to live on their own with little government support and few provisions.

Among this group was Josephie Flaherty, the unrecognized, half-Inuit son of Robert Flaherty, who never met his father. In a narrative rich with human drama and heartbreak, Melanie McGrath uses the story of three generations of the Flaherty family—the filmmaker; his illegitimate son, Josephie; and Josephie’s daughters, Mary and Martha—to bring this extraordinary tale of mistreatment and deprivation to life.

From Publishers Weekly
In this riveting tale of Canadian bureaucracy and cultural arrogance, British journalist McGrath (Motel Nirvana) tells how in 1953 a handful of Inuit families were coerced from Hudson Bay's eastern shore and relocated 1,500 miles north to bitterly rocky and icy Ellesmere Island—the world's ninth-largest island. Sold as a humane attempt to provide a livelihood for the Inuit when fox pelt prices plummeted, the scheme was, in fact, callously political. Canada wanted to plant the flag—and some people—on the uninhabited and largely impenetrable island, over which Greenland, Denmark and the United States had territorial aspirations, particularly as the Cold War intensified. A compact history of northern life adds context to the story of horrific exile, which McGrath humanizes by focusing on Josephie Flaherty, the mixed-race son of an Inuit mother and of American director Robert Flaherty, who created the cinematic sensation Nanook of the North in the 1920s. McGrath's account of inhumane deprivation is based on contemporary documents and astonishing interviews with survivors, who after decades of pleading to be repatriated to their homeland finally forced public hearings in 1993 that shocked Canadians and culminated in the 1999 creation of Nunavut, the world's only self-governing territory for indigenous people. From Booklist
*Starred Review* McGrath has accomplished significant and riveting work in her investigation into the Canadian relocation of several Inuit families to Ellesmere Island in the 1950s. By focusing primarily on one family, she humanizes what has been called one of the worst human rights violations in Canadian history. Through meticulous research and interviews, McGrath embraces actual events and the greater question of white reliance on misconceptions concerning indigenous peoples. She opens with the 1920s filming of Nanook of the North, then pursues connections the filmmaker had to one Inuit family. By contrasting how the Inuit are perceived by movie audiences versus the treatment they received from government employees, she sets the reader up for the devastating conclusions revealed in the survivors' 1993 testimony before the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples. Because the events and people McGrath portrays had a direct effect on the development of the Nunavut Territory, her book is an excellent example of living history. Highly readable and utterly fascinating, this startling examination of the meaning of the term civilized world is nonfiction literature at its best. Colleen Mondor

Review
“McGrath is a gifted, passionate and sensitive story-teller, and through her the authentic voice of the Arctic, not the clarion call of great white explorers, rings loud and clear. . . . Her research is meticulous, her touch is light. . . . Her play with language is disarming and original . . . fresh, illuminating and heartbreaking.” –The Sunday Telegraph

“[A] poignant and humane book. McGrath . . . tells an impressively researched and often poetic story.” –Observer

“McGrath . . . has a wonderful feel for landscape and so the Arctic itself assumes the life of a character. . . . The language is lovely. Modulated, lyrical and beautiful as the stark nature it describes, it makes McGrath’s book more than a fascinating and instructive read. It makes it a joyful one.” –Evening Standard

“Gripping. . . . [McGrath] offers a carefully imagined portrait of the appalling lives of the Inuit on Ellesmere Island. This is a story of official wrong-headedness and arrogance and McGrath relays it with compassion.” –Guardian

“Her mastery of her subject is so precise and beguiling, so heart-stoppingly eloquent and textured that I defy anybody not to find her book one of the most seductive reads of the decade.” –Daily Telegraph

“With startling economy, McGrath races towards . . . the landmark recognition of her protagonists' suffering. . . . This is a beautiful, poetic, gripping book.” –Sunday Times

Disappearance of first nation people: the Inuits in Canada.
By Mary E. Latela
This is a riveting account of the oppression, mistreatment, and near annihilation of the Inuit forced to live in the Northern Artic regions most recently in the 1950s forward. What the book makes clear is that this pattern of taking over aboriginal people is long and truly harsh. Ross Gibson, who was put in charge of the forced movement to the uninhabitable Ellesmore and other "islands" was not aware, but the history of forcing Inuit people from their homeland began in 1576 with Martin Frobisher, Captain of the Gabriel, whose men tried to lure the natives on board, then took one prisoner all the way back to England, where his gravesites still remains.
There was no informed consent; the Inuits were told they were going to a better place, where they would have free reign, land of their own, rich hunting and fishing. What they gave up were their minimal government payments, simple medical assessment, occasional handouts of food. One of the gravest dangers when the while "colonists" explored other nations is the sharing of viruses: untreated tuberculosis, measles, unattended births - no one was trained to help deliver babies who were never warm enough and who rarely had protein, which they needed to survive.
The conference meant to symbolize apology from the Canadian government, which took place in 1993, found only a handful of survivors in attendance. Some spoke angrily of their losses; others sat listening to more promises, which have never been fulfilled. I have read this type of story before and yet, this account of the Inuit exile is most heart-breaking.

Riveting and heartbreaking all at once.
By Raspberry G.
This is a fascinating and heart-breaking story of how the Canadian government moved a group of Inuit out of their homeland to a place in the farthest reaches of human tolerance for cold, darkness, and starvation. It's a revealing look down the long tunnel of greed as the Canadian government move the Inuit so they can take over their lands and harvest the fur-bearing animals there. The story reminded me that in such a climate a small problem can become a catastrophic one. Example: Often when husbands are gone hunting or trapping, nursing mothers must go foraging for wood and food. If the men are gone for weeks at a time, these supplies run out and Mom and baby can die of starvation and hypothermia. The book also reminded me that we have seen this story before within our own borders. Who knew the Canadian Government was just as arrogant and greedy as that in the U.S.?

The story takes care not to beg the issues of the Inuit; evenso, the reader still finds him/herself caring about the Inuit and their mistreatment at the hands of people whose primary motivation is money. It follows a real family through four generations. Yes it's the same old story of what happens to indigenous people on every continent, every island and in even the most cold and remote corners of the world. It led me to wonder, why is this story always the same? Why do the aborigines always get the shaft? And since I am one, the answer stings. This book looks at all the players, and all the pressures that nearly wiped out the indigenious people who lived along the edge of Hudson Bay. There is an ending of hope, however. But I'm not holding my breath.

I would recommend this book if you're interested in this kind of story. It's very well done.

Masterful recounting of a story that needed to be told
By R. T. Rood
The story of the Inuit of Inukjuak and their forcible removal to Ellesmere Island is one of suffering, endurance, and ultimately, vindication and triumph. It is told with compassion and conviction by Melanie McGrath. The reviewers in both Booklist and Publishers Weekly used the word “riveting” to describe this narrative. The Long Exile is a masterful recounting of a story that needed to be told. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
