About the Author
James Pannafino is a faculty member at Millersville University, Pennsylvania in the Art and Design Department where he teaches graphic and interactive design courses. Before teaching at the college level, James worked as both a graphic and interactive designer in the professional field. His research interests include Interactive design fundamentals, visualization, visual storytelling and digital narrative forms. James has presented at conferences at the following institutions and universities: HOW Interactive Design, Fordham University, Harvard University, Maryland Institute of College and Art, Penn State University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His love for communication design and visualization has led him to produce his first book; Common College Sense: The Visual Guide to Understanding Everyday Tasks for College Students. The book uses both visual diagrams and written explanations to clearly describe common-sense tasks.

A Good Introductory Read to Conepts in Interdiciplinary Interaction Design

This book is a quick 90-page read through various concepts important to the field of interaction design. Generally, the book has a single concept on each page, with the discipline the concept is coming from, a name, and a short paragraph description of what the concept is. This is followed by a figure or visual representation of the concept, which takes up a half to 2/3 of the page. Furthermore, the book is small, and is 9" x 6".

The book is a great and quick introductory read to many of the various concepts of importance to interaction design, drawing from various fields such as gaming, usability, psychology and design among others. The pages give you the grasp of the central concept, and enough understanding that you can go out and find out about the concepts in more detail in external sources. A sampling of the concepts it touches on includes: affordances, digital skeumorphs, fogg behavior model, pareto principle, and sequence mapping.

The Bottom Line: This book would serve well as an introductory survey of various interaction concepts for a beginner, or act as a quick reference for more advanced practitioners. However, those looking for an in-depth understanding of the various topics should look elsewhere as this book only has a perhaps 4 descriptive sentences per topic on average.

Good starter book

For a graphic designer just dipping their toes in the water of interactive design, this book is a good primer of many of the different disciplines in interactive design. Not all of the topics explained will be fully understood with light level of detail supplied in this book. It's sort of like a dictionary level explanation for each topic - each of which might fit on the size of a playing card. To truly understand each topic, the reader needs to understand that there are volumes (literally) on each topic from the interactive professionals that specialize in each branch of this field. I feel it's important for interactive designers to understand how broad this topic can be and that every interactive designer (even if what they do is not the "look and the feel") deserves value and respect for the science and deep level of knowledge they bring to this profession.

Great Teaching Tool!

I was so excited to come across this book. It clearly and comprehensively defines the theories crucial to being effective at interaction design. It was a quick and easy read and I learned things I can use to explain to clients and colleagues why their designs should look this way instead of that way. I teach graphic design at the college level and have made this book a required reading! It was written by a teacher and works well with interaction design curriculum. Excellent teaching tool, interesting read!

Han-Way Huang is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Technology at Minnesota State University, Mankato. A member of both IEEE and ASEE, he has 25 years of teaching experience in microprocessors and microcontrollers. A well-respected author, he has also written THE HCS12/9S12: AN INTRODUCTION TO HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE (Delmar Learning), EMBEDDED SYSTEM DESIGN WITH M8051 (Cengage Engineering), THE PIC MICROCONTROLLER: AN INTRODUCTION TO SOFTWARE AND INTERFACING (Delmar Learning), THE HC12 MICROCONTROLLER: AN INTRODUCTION (Delmar Learning), and THE HC11 MICROCONTROLLER: AN INTRODUCTION (Delmar Learning). Dr. Huang earned an MS and Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Iowa State University and the BSEE degree from National Taiwan University.

Mr. Chartrand holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Queen¿s university in Kingston Ontario. He has been teaching digital courses for 20 years at Niagara College in Welland , Ontario. A very thorough overview of the PIC microcontroller

Having a background in software development (C/C++), having written a lot of assembly language in the distant past, and being familiar with processor architecture, I found the book to be straightforward and useful to me. I was able to make rapid progress through the text, sometimes skipping ahead to sections to find just what I needed. Plenty of useful source code in both asm and C as well. The professor who wrote this put together what seems like a very clean, easy to understand text (where "easy" may depend on your background - I found it easy). It is true that you can probably find much of the information in the processor specification PDF file available from Microchip or in other online sources, yet I found it very convenient to have it all available in one organized textbook. I do recommend the book for others wishing to learn more about the PIC18.

Writing style is clear and easy to follow. Detailed and straightforward explanations.

I bought this book in 2016 because I had to instruct students in a lab-based course, and they had learnt PIC18F MCU in a previous course, from this book. I had no exposure to PIC MCUs before but I have a background on CPU architecture and assembly programming based on the 86x processors. The book fulfilled its purpose for me and I had no difficulties following along.

Overcome the snooze response

What I like about this book, that other books about rising early only gloss over, is that it deals with the real mental blocks that stand in the way of your goal to rise early. Marlin gives you techniques to overcome those mental blocks, not just one technique but many. In my mind, this book is well worth the price.

Great book!

This book is really short - I just read it in about an hour. But it's full of very good advice on waking up early. What I liked most is that the author writes in a way that my mind accepts. I don't know if that makes sense to you, but I've read many self-help books that give advice that sounds too difficult to take, or that make me feel that my subconscious mind is my enemy, or subtle insinuations that the techniques might be good, but there are good chances that I personally fail. Or the opposite: they make success sound so easy that It's suspicious. This books is based on NLP. Besides being very funny, it's really smart and and the techniques (which are plenty), make a lot of sense, and it's convincingly inspiring. I'm sure I won't need any other book to achieve my goal of waking up early. And if I do, there are links at the end of the book to other resources that the author considers to be the best on the web.

creative suggestions

Marlin provides a concentrated collection of great ideas--some of which have been around a while, but he provides a fresh perspective on those--to help us all leave that inviting bed in the morning like adults & not crawl out kicking & screaming like many of us usually do. I'm encouraged by his mantra that if one technique doesn't work or goes stale, try another! He also provided links to additional support methods. The book was laid out well to compensate for a variety of electronic reading tools, although the pictures were a bit hokey, they made the right connections. (I have bought e-books from well-known authors & they were miserable if not used on a specific e-reader. Thanks for the great work, Mr. Martin--call me at 5:73 some morning!

Very inspiring book! Phil Knight is very popular because of his Nike creations. Nike is one of my favorite brand of shoes. Every designs were unique and one of the tough shoes I've used. Knowing the life of its creator, I finally understand why Nike is very strong and successful in the industry of shoes. Reading this book will inspired everyone to become successful in the business. The story of how a shoe mogul began is such an inspiring one. This book, although it just contains summaries of the chapters, still gave a good deal of important information on how Buck made it big in the shoe industry. The takeaways are really useful for me. It helped me reflect on the lessons on each part of the biography. Teachers, students, business people, and those who are searching for motivation and inspiration would greatly benefit from this summary book.

About the Author

Fabio M. Soares

Fabio M. Soares is currently a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Para (Universidade Federal do Para - UFPA), in northern Brazil. He is very passionate about technology in almost all fields, and designs neural network solutions since 2004 and has applied this technique in several fields like telecommunications, industrial process control and modeling, hydroelectric power generation, financial applications, retail customer analysis and so on. His research topics cover supervised learning for data-driven modeling. As of 2017, he is currently carrying on research projects with chemical process modeling and control in the aluminum smelting and ferronickel processing industries, and has worked as a lecturer teaching subjects involving computer programming and artificial intelligence paradigms. As an active researcher, he has also a number of articles published in English language in many conferences and journals, including four book chapters.

Alan M. F. Souza

Alan M. F. Souza is computer engineer from Instituto de Estudos Superiores da Amazonia (IESAM). He holds a post-graduate degree in project management software and a master's degree in industrial processes (applied computing) from Universidade Federal do Para (UFPA). He has been working with neural networks since 2009 and has worked with Brazilian IT companies developing in Java, PHP, SQL, and other programming languages since 2006. He is passionate about programming and computational intelligence. Currently, he is a professor at Universidade da Amazonia (UNAMA) and a PhD candidate at UFPA.

HUGELY frustrating!!

Purchased the paper version...and omigosh, this thing is mind-numbingly frustrating!!

Most significantly, this is NOT a learn-by-doing book. Snippets of code are presented in the book, so you're not entering the stuff yourself -- just compiling what they've done. Speaking of which...be SURE to get the code from github, NOT via the link emailed from the publisher's web site, because THAT version of the code isn't even close to reflecting what's in the text. (Did I mention frustrating?)

Oh, you want an explanation of the code? No problem! The book promises (page 19) that "In appendix C, we present the reader the full documentation of the classes along with their UML class and package diagrams that will surely help as a reference for the book." EXCEPT that (1) appendix C does not appear in the book, and (2) the Preface describes the chapters and appendices, noting that the Appendices must be downloaded as a PDF...except that (a) appendix C isn't even mentioned here, and (b) not surprisingly, it is NOT part of the downloaded PDF. (Be careful with the really long name that's given -- no shortened URL here! -- as the 'W' must be lowercase.)

Taken together, not only was this book purchase a waste of both time and money, but there's not a chance I'll ever purchase another book from this publisher, who seems heck-bent on saving paper rather than, you know, teaching.

A truly terrific book —�fascinating to read, intuitive, and incredibly well-written. The entire book is terrific, but the sections on altruism, reciprocity, and Hamilton's Rule are in my opinion the absolute best material on these subjects out there. Highly recommended.
