About the Author
WARREN MURPHY was born in Jersey City, where he worked in journalism and politics until launching the Destroyer series with Richard Sapir in 1971. A screenwriter (Lethal Weapon II, The Eiger Sanction) as well as a novelist, Murphy’s work has won a dozen national awards, including multiple Edgars and Shamuses. He has lectured at many colleges and universities, and is currently offering writing lessons at his website, WarrenMurphy.com. A Korean War veteran, some of Murphy’s hobbies include golf, mathematics, opera, and investing. He has served on the board of the Mystery Writers of America, and has been a member of the Screenwriters Guild, the Private Eye Writers of America, the International Association of Crime Writers, and the American Crime Writers League. He has five children: Deirdre, Megan, Brian, Ardath, and Devin.

Good but incomplete ...

Another solid addition to the siblings series ...but...it was not a full story. It felt like the first episode of a TV miniseries. I don't want teased threads to lead me to the next book. I particularly like the Cole character. Freya disappointed by being, in this book less than herself and quite frankly a touch 'girly' and as always I just want to give Stone a bit of a 'slapping' but damn it I am enjoying this series. Full story next time please. Forget the teasers for 'next season'. They just irritate. In closing... The next one is going to be...soon...right?

Not that I hadn't enjoyed the first three books

Gerald is hitting his stride here. Not that I hadn't enjoyed the first three books. They were all enjoyable fun. But this is where things all seemed to come together for me.
THIS is a Destroyer book!
The comedy timing all worked. I found myself worrying at the right places. And there was the sense of family that is really cementing this cast together.
If I were to have a gripe, it would be with the ending. Well, not the ending itself. They setups at the end.
Yes, they do make me look forward to the next outing. But it does seem to take away from the actual ending.
However, if that is my biggest complaint... I think all is sitting pretty nice.

Unique Australian Manual on the No Man's Land of Geology: Regolith

Outline of regolith studies, Intro to weathering, Mechanisms of weathering, Mineral and rock weathering, Hydrology and regolith, Landforms and surficial sediments, Slopes and plains, Soils, Applied soil studies, Duricrusts stratigraphy and the age of the regolith, Tectonics and models of landscape evolution, Ores and geochemical exploration, Techniques, Regolith maps, The big picture: regolith in the geosystem.

Ollier and Pain succeed in bringing attention to the entire mantle, or regolith, that covers bedrock. That is, soil, weathered rock (saprolite), residuum, transported surficial sediment, and chemical products. Essentially this is a complete reworking of the now dated title WEATHERING.
The economic importance of regolith studies in Australia has paid off for mining concerns. But the authors include much here for pedologists, geographers, and sedimentary geologists working in arid and semi-arid environments. I liked their concept of 'whole continent' evolutionary geomorphology (p 274) which was introduced previously in ANCIENT LANDFORMS.

Try REGOLITH GEOLOGY AND GEOMORPHOLOGY to round out the coverage of a resource being destroyed faster than it's created.

In my opinion, this is one of the better books available for soil scientists, geomorphologists, and engineering geologists who need a good desk reference book on soil pedogenesis and landforms. The only weakness is the dearth of discussion on landslides and their role in landscape development.

Helpful Reflection Material

Two recurring themes of achievers are mentioned in the first few pages of this book, the importance of toughminded optimism and the power of persistence. It is in that spirit that Gardner develops his topic. With the inevitability of change, openness to new experience is vital to self-renewal he claims. Being active in intentional change leads to growth rather than change by default he explains. Knowing how to creatively interact with changes in the environment is a learned ability that can lead to the development of new potentialities Gardner writes.
This interactive process is experienced at the individual level also. Gardner describes healthy self-renewing people as those who both give and accept love. They depend on other people and are capable of having other people depend on them.
Passion is part of the self-renewed life. He says people of that bent know they must have conviction about what they are doing and if they don't, they need to find something they can have conviction about.
The principles he describes at the individual level have implications collectively as well. He goes on to state that "it is important that a society create an atmostphere that encourages effort, striving and vigorous performance" (p. 20). It is within social systems that individuals make their contributions. A lot of wise insight is provided in this book. He leaves the readers better off than when they picked up the book to read.

Best book I've read in at least 10 years

This is NOT a self-help, pop psychology book.
This IS a profoundly eloquent, deeply perceptive, compelling set of antidotes to soundbites.
It is timeless. It puts forth pragmatic and resonant ways of navigating the complexities of dynamic change within the necessary stability of society.
Gardner's observations on innovation, creativity, motivation are quietly inspiring.

Self-Renewal

I purchased this book as a course requirement but will continue to use this as a renewal product to recharge the batteries. When you are feeling stagnant, this is a great book to read before you go out and try to change your world.
