The Way We Love (And Kill) Now

This is a fresh new novel by a writer who’s worked in multiple formats. It appears to be a serial killer novel as male victims are found throughout Manhattan, all mutilated in a similar fashion. Sgt. Burt Brymmer heads the Manhattan Homicide Task Force. With the help of his partner, Steve Ross, he investigates the murders while dealing with his own demons. Brymmer’s life is more or less empty, while Ross’s is filled with difficulties. Brymmer has, however, begun to establish a relationship with a reporter, but he suspects that she may be the murderer of the men (or, in another wrinkle, one of the murderers of the men).

The plot is complex, with multiple victims and multiple suspects, but the book takes its energy from the dialogue between partners and lovers. This is not so much an ensemble-cast story (as with, e.g., Ed McBain’s 87th precinct series) as it is a ‘small set of individuals interacting’. The individuals are both sad and interesting, skilled and burdened. The dialogue is superb and it is peppered with occasional one-liners that are truly memorable.

Manhattan is evoked very nicely. New Yorkers will love the book, even though it portrays the city’s darker elements and denizens. The narrative is ambitious and textured but not ponderous or slow. Its major theme or subtext is ‘the way we love now’, which is to say, not particularly well and not particularly lovingly. The detectives must find their way in a world in which everyone seems to have lost their’s and the result is a memorable tale of detection that is also a running commentary on our lives and our culture, the latter of which leave little room for optimism. Finding that crease of light is part of Burt Brymmer’s quest and as we get to know him we cannot help wishing him well.

SGT Burt Brymmer is the leader of the Task Force in NYC - Homicide Division. Normally his elite group has a total of 7 detectives working a case but in this "Jackie' investigation, the number swells to 50. It appears a serial killer is on the loose and the pressure begins to mount on SGT Brymmer and his team. Well, 'ding dong' the race is on to find the killer of these men.

The author has a firm grasp on what makes people tick, for sure. To paraphrase Burt, if one expects nothing, one will be content. In solving crimes, I learned from Burt that the 'why' is not as important as the 'who' .Despite the multiple murders and more than tricky cases to solve (tricky dicky, did I write that?), Mr. Cody manages to interject lots of humor within the pages. I learned about Thailand and some cases there in which the men were hurrying home to avoid the ducks! Sending items by messenger in the City takes on an entirely new meaning, also.

Bodies keep piling up, the 'whodunit' thickens and the reader begins to wonder if SGT Brynner and his team will finally be able to find a solid clue that ties them together. Lots of pounding of shoe leather on the streets by many detectives to find the tie that binds!

All in all, despite the multiple murders and the serious side of that beast, the human nature side of this plays an equal portion for me. The plot has multiple twists and turns, characters are well developed and the ending also took me by surprise.

A detective story that's more than "just" a detective story, though as such, it's a fine one--intriguing from the start, logical at the end with not a plot-hole in sight. But I'm one of those readers who reads for more than plot and it's there that Manhattan Roulette really scores. Or soars. The writing is terrific. Quick-witted dialogue and deft descriptions. Insightful narrative that probes inner lives. The leading characters are so fully real that after you've traveled with them through the book, you want to pick up the phone and ask them how they're doing. New York is real too. As someone who lives here, I can promise you the author's got Manhattan down pat--not through a series of set-piece locations, but rather by conveying how life here is lived. By all kinds of people --the ones who get to live in that zillion-dollar townhouse and spend their afternoons shopping at Prada, and the rest of us, paying unreasonable rents for tiny apartments and looking for something approximating love. (Speaking of which, I fell in love with Burt Brymmer, the detective sergeant who's in charge of the case. What a wonderful character! I hope Mr Cody brings him back for another round.)

Great resource

Let me preface this review by saying that this course is complicated and difficult. I believe many of the other reviews come out of frustration of the course and not the book.

The book is a good resource and has many great aspects about it. There are a few downfalls and those are common with the other reviews, which is the errors that are throughout the book. Professor Faroughi will provide a list of errors and corrections upon request. This will take care of 99% of the confusion. When looking at other books that are similar in subject matter, this one has shined in great relatable examples. Towards the end of chapters there are great verilog code examples as well as critical thinking questions about the subject matter for that given section. If you put in the time to learn the subject, this is a great resource and will aid you in understanding logical circuit design.

BUY THE HARD COPY

*At the time of this review, problems with the kindle version still exist*
I was satisfied with the contents of the book, thus I gave the review 5 stars. All of my issues are with the kindle version of the book, which I would give one star.

After my second year of college and collecting a bunch (now) useless books, I decided to start buying all my books on Kindle so I wouldn't have to deal storing them for any future purpose. I have purchased many kindle versions of text books to use on my Galaxy tablet and I have always been satisfied until this book.

For some reason, this book isn't formatted like a textbook normally is laid out for kindle. Normal text books have the same exact pages as the hard copy, and allow you to flip from page to page, and even zoom in on pages. However, this book is formatted similar to some of the novels I have bought on kindle. Instead of page numbers there are locations, about 10,000 of them, which is relatively meaningless while searching for a specific diagram or concept in the book. When trying to zoom in the read the text, the entire layout of the page changes, making it extremely difficult to refer to diagrams while reading the section that describes it. There are more problems with the Kindle version but I think you get the point by now.

Here is the bottom line: if you are like me and like to buy your books for Kindle save yourself the trouble and buy the hard cover of this one.

About the Author
John R. Cross, FCSP, Dr.Ac., MRSH, has been practicing traditional and complementary medicine since 1970, and has remained at the forefront of his profession in clinical and teaching fields. He is the author of five books, including Acupuncture and the Chakra Energy System. He remains passionate about the integration of professional complementary therapy into mainstream physical therapy, and was awarded a Fellowship by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy for this work in 2005. Although this book isn't written for the lay person it is excellent for students of Chinese Medicine and Asian bodywork at the entry level. About the Author
Andrew E. Dessler is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1994. He did postdoctoral work at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (1994-1996) and then spent nine years on the faculty of the University of Maryland (1996-2005). In 2000, he worked as a Senior Policy Analyst in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, where he collaborated with Ted Parson. Dessler's academic publications include three books: The Chemistry and Physics of Stratospheric Ozone (Academic Press, 2000), The Science and Politics of Global Climate Change: A Guide to the Debate (with Ted Parson, Cambridge University Press, 2006, 2010) and Introduction to Modern Climate Change (Cambridge University Press, 2012). He has also published extensively in the scientific literature on stratospheric ozone depletion and the physics of climate.

Want to Understand Climate Change?

Andrew Dessler is the right guide for this task. This well-informed, up-to-date book provides the basics, the arguments and controversies, the politics, and why scientists are telling us to pay attention. There's some math, but Dessler explains it well.

Useful for the motivated reader

Dr. Dessler provides excellent and up-to-date treatment of both the science and policy aspects of climate change. Although written as a textbook, the work can be recommended to the general reader with a strong interest in the subject matter. A prior background in physics is not required, but a working knowledge of basic algebra is assumed. A good feature is Dr. Dessler's skillful use of analogies with familiar concepts to elucidate some of the more recondite points of the physics and economics of climate change. There are problem sets at the chapter ends, with only a minority of the problems requiring numerical calculation. Solutions to the problems are not included.
