Dark romance with a tough, independent heroine... Perfect recipe for a hot read

So. Damn. Good. Excellent writing. The characters have intense sexual chemistry from the onset, but there is character development and Tate and Jameson develop their feelings for each other in a believable way. AKA, it didn't happen over night. It may have been lust at first sight, but love doesn't come into the picture that easily for these two characters. Tate is a kick-ass, tough, independent heroine, and can dish out as good as she gets, and she gets a lot from Jameson. I loved her character, and how she stood up for herself to everyone, whenever.

Also, Jameson doesn't just open up to Tate immediately, he takes his time before revealing his kink, and by that time Tate is ready to handle whatever he throws her way (although I feel someone like Tate could've handled it from the beginning).

I was torn about the cliffhanger... And what happens at the ends. No spoilers, but damn! Now I'm stalking Fantome online trying to find out if she's released any other excerpts from Separation!

This book is dark. If you don't like reading dark erotica, don't read it! I love it.

First of all, this is a spoiler free review. Secondly, I won this book from a book blog and am incredibly happy that I did. This book is NOTHING like anything I've read before and that's meant as a compliment. Tatum and Jameson are nearly, one in the same, screwed up person. The sex is ROUGH and spectacular between them. And the ending...Bravo Stylo, bravo. You had me crying, anxious, scared and then pissed because you left me hanging. Yes folks, this ends in a cliffhanger. Brilliantly written. I grew attached to the characters immediately. Fast read because I didn't want to put it down. CAN NOT WAIT FOR BOOK 2!! Do not get this book if you do not like or can not handle reading rough, graphic sex and strong language is used throughout especially in sex scenes where it is the most graphic.

DARK. GRIPPING. EMOTIONAL. BRILLIANT.

OH. MY. GOSH. I am truly speechless right now! Page one of this book is a vacuum and this vacuum just sucked me in to the deepest darkest abyss I have ever known. The words on on this page became very much alive. They slowly climbed off of the page, reached past my mind and gripped my heart with no intention of letting it go.The writing was absolutely brilliant. The characters were so believable, had such layers, such depth. Make no mistake, this is a dark, dark erotic novel however the author still makes you feel the characters' sexual tension, elation, fear, sadness, uncertainty, loyalty, betrayal, everything. I am not usually one to buy a book knowing there is a huge cliffhanger, but I couldn't help it. I couldn't put it down. This was a brilliantly written masterpiece. One I won't soon forget. One I will be reading again. One whose conclusion I am eagerly anticipating.

An introduction to genetically-designed horticulture

The first transgenic flower was created in 1987, and ever since then horticulturists have been very enthused about the possibility of using genetic engineering to change the appearance of existing flowering species, and to create novel plants with exotic characteristics for use in the home and in the commercial realm. There has been talk about the development of user-kits that will allow both the amateur and the home horticulturist to engage in the genetic modification of plants in order to bring about plant varieties with any given phenotype. In addition, one could produce varieties that flower longer, are impervious to low temperatures, are drought-resistant, or have better and longer-lasting fruit. Such technological developments are very exciting, and when risk factors are properly taken into account, it is fascinating to contemplate what horticulturists will produce using their imagination and skills in genetic engineering. Could one for example have a lawn that only grows to a certain height or whose color can be other then green, or could trees be engineered that are still broadleaf but yet survive the coldest of winters? Could cacti be genetically engineered so that they have considerably longer flowering periods? Could leaf shape be engineered so that it is totally different than what occurs naturally, with textures or geometries selected by the horticulturist? Could the photosynthetic apparatus be altered in order for it to work in different parts of the spectrum?

In this book, which could be considered a literature survey, the authors of the articles discuss many of these developments. The interested reader is expected to have a strong background in the molecular biology of plants, but even those not expert in this area, such as this reviewer, can read most of the articles without too much difficulty. A few of the authors recognize that the genetic engineering of ornamental horticulture is still in its infancy, but they also look forward to the day when the techniques, or others similar to them, will be applied on such a scale as to make them cost effective and accessible to both the amateur and professional horticulturist. Genetic engineering can be thought of as a collection of strategies that alter the metabolism and phenotypes of plant species. The reader will encounter many of these strategies in this book, and it is very engaging reading.

One such strategy concerns the problem of proliferation of non-native plants, and the use of genetic engineering to induce fertility in these plants in order to stop or retard this proliferation. Part of this discussion concerns the tapetal-specific transcriptional activity of the tobacco TA29 gene and the Rnase (barnase) from the bacterium Bacillus anyloliquefaciens. The targeted expression of barnase by the TA29 gene promoter destroys the tapetal cells, which inhibits pollen formation and thus produces pollen-free parent (male sterility). But the authors do not discuss how to restore the fertility by use of the `barstar', which is a specific inhibitor of barnase. The restorer gene is made up of the coding region controlled by the TA29 gene promoter. The expression of barstar in the male parent does not effect the tapetal development, and the plants can thus produce pollen (male fertility). If a male-sterile plant of the female parent is crossed with a male-fertile plant of the male parent, the resulting F1 hybrid contains both genes and expresses both of them. The tapetal development will be normal and the resulting hybrid will be completely fertile. This raises the exciting possibility of performing this type of genetic engineering for all plants that reproduce sexually. Invasiveness of non-native species could thus be controlled, and even entire geographical areas could be tuned to allow only certain species to reproduce, while forbidding others.

Along these same lines the authors discuss the expression of the STIG1-barnase fusion gene in tobacco, which suppresses the stigmatic secretory zone and produces female sterility and the FBP7 gene promoter, which controls expression of barnase gene in tobacco and produces transgenic plants with no ovules or seeds. Some other strategies for inducing fertility concern the manipulation of chalcone synthase gene expression, which causes the disruption of flavonoid biosynthesis and induces male sterility; the inhibition of expression of an ethylene-forming enzyme in a pistil, which causes the disruption of ovule development and induces female sterility; the overexpression of CKX1 gene in transgenic maize, which causes male sterility; the manipulation of homeotic genes, which alters reproductive organ development, and most controversial of late the expression of a lethal gene along with the chemically inducible Cre gene in seeds, which results in seeds incapable of germination (this is the Terminator technology, which has been widely discussed in the press).

Another very interesting discussion in the book concerns the biotechnology of flowering, with particular attention paid to the plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The genome of this plant was the first to be sequenced, and a full understanding of its metabolome and proteome is promised by 2010. It is not surprising therefore to find it discussed in this book, and the authors devote some space to the `ABC model' that describes the specification of floral organs. As expected, mutations that result in the reduction, alteration, or placement of the floral organs are used to identify the genes responsible for development of the floral organs. There are four such genes: AP2, AG, PI, and AP3, the misspecification of which alters floral organ types. The ABC model refers to the three concentric fields of genetic activity, with the activity of AP2 for A in whorls 1 and 2, the activity of PI/AP3 for B in whorls 2 and 3, and AG for C in whorls 3 and 4. As the author remarks, the ABC model has been refined to take into account the discovery of `MADS' genes that are involved in defining the petal, stamen, and carpel domain (the so-called MADS box is a highly conserved DNA binding domain reflecting the belief that the flowering genes belong to an evolutionarily conserved family of transcription factors). The author discusses the cloning of the flowering-time gene from A. thaliana into the genome of the ornamental species Osteospermum ecklonis in order to change the onset time for flowering.

Have gone through every book on the 300s - this is the best!

I want to be able to use all of the best features of the Nikon D300s and have read every book on the camera. This one is the best because: 1. The author not only goes through how every feature and menu operates, but more importantly, he give you his suggestions and reasons on why you'd want to use each feature (and more importantly, how the various menu options work in conjunction with each other to achieve very specific situations). 2. The illustrations are all large and in color - while this may seem a minor thing, the author goes the extra step in color coding various areas of the screens so you can identify the information easily. 3. Not a re-write of the Nikon manual - this is my major complaint about most of the other books on the market - this one goes "deep" into the workings of the camera. 4. The author identifies various features which he feels are not in your best interest to use - and gives his reasons why he feels that way. 5. Best of all the author has a very detailed section on his best suggestions on setting up parameters in the menus to use for very specific shooting situations.

I have several Post-it notes on various sections of this book - this is a manual that you should keep in your camera bag!

A must read !

This book was so much more than I expected. As an amateur photographer I must say that this book points you to the right direction. Everything is clearly explained. I also appreciate that the author included suggested settings and advise on lenses etc... All the information you need to make the most of your Nikon D300S is in here :) It's also a pleasure to look at. I have bought many instructional books in the past and although they had great reviews the quality of paper they were printed on and the basic drawings did not help. Everything was very technical and difficult for an amateur like me to understand; however in this book nothing has been taken for granted. All the little details are explained and many colored photographs are included. I am very happy with this purchase and I highly recommend David Busch's Guide.

Great but has its problems

This is definitely one of the best (if not the best) camera specific books out there. It does go beyond the manual that comes with the camera - which is large itself!

However, I'm always leery when any book starts off in detail on things like how to install the battery or put a lens on. You would assume the book is intended for the beginner but it never works out that way. The advanced items are usually skimmed over. And, unfortunately, that is true with this book. I'm still confused on several items.

One problem is he goes through every menu and button with minimal detail always stating it will be explained further in chapter such and such. There are two problems with that. Since I have no use of the item at the time I can't really try it out expecting to wait until chapter... But then I forget what menu it was and have to go back and find it. And in most cases the extra detailed explanations are very brief or just a repeat. For instance, interval timing on page 311 provides no additional (useful) information. In fact, there is an entire paragraph on an "affordable add-on" but he doesn't explain what it is exactly. There is information left out or too difficult to find. For instance, I couldn't access the interval menu item. Turns out I had the release mode dial in a setting that turns it off but I couldn't find that in the book.

The book is over 500 pages including the index. It could have been cut down significantly without the repeat of why his books are better and the references to different cameras - I guess he is trying to appeal to previous Nikon owners but that limits his audience. Another example, he spends a great deal of space explaining why he thinks the built-in level is a toy because his tripod has a level and it doesn't do fore/back leveling. But not all of us have a level and how often is one concerned about leveling fore/back? As has been said, just stick to the facts please.

He has done a terrific job with providing a wealth of information and has provided lots of pictures to show which item he is referring to. I think along with cutting it down a bit, the format would be better off including the detail along with each menu/button setting and provide suggested settings instead of referring to later chapters. Then put how to get different shots in additional chapters using the various settings together.

I like the book it just takes a bit of effort finding what I need.

One for the digital natives and immigrants

As a speculative fiction thriller, this is a first novel that is well worth a read. What particularly impressed me is that it relies on a central premise which to my reading is genuinely authentic and will most definitely resonate with today's readers, digital natives and immigrants alike.

It takes a couple of chapters for clarity in concept. But by then it is cemented in and it's a rollicking good ride. For those who enjoy Dan Brown and Matthew Reilly, you'll be pleased. And maybe a bit spooked. The characters are likeable and while there is some predictability in the plot path, there are still some clever and original surprises.

I'm really really hopeful that the author will be picked up a by a solid publishing house with a good editor for number two. Some aspects of the writing were rushed and seemed a little self conscious. I would love the author to slow it down and treat the reader to his generosity of thought, and ideas in more detail. More please...

Erasure - Totally intriguing

Hearing that A.T.H Webber had written his first book, I couldn't wait for my paperback to arrive. It was hard to tell exactly what this was about until you began reading. Once I did, I was hooked! There are so many twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat at times. Everything is so real and believable that I now wonder just how much is known about us and by how many. This is so very different to anything I would normally choose to read which is why I loved it so much. Taking you a journey or intrigue across Europe with 'big brother' watching made excellent reading. Talking about this book I found I kept saying, 'you just have to read it'!

A big fan of Sherlock Holmes I enjoyed this story about Young Sherlock — Rebel Fire. Yes, to be honest there was a lot that could have been approved on but overall it was simply a fun, easy read.

I enjoyed how we get to know Sherlock as a young boy. His development of how the boy comes into his own and becomes the man is fun as we discover life with him. He is a little on the whiney side, so unlike his confident grown up self, always questioning instead of just going for it dragging everyone along with him. Bringing in his violin playing and bee keeping helping to bond the young and the old Sherlock was nice.

At times the dialogue wasn’t strong but it wasn’t horrific either. I think as the series proceeds it will sharpen but then maybe I am just comparing too much to the original Sherlock.

I was able to visualize most of the scenery or where they were at each step of the way. Some scenes were shaky but still good. I realized that even though a lot of these characters aren’t in the original books, they are here to set him up to become the man he is to become. Just as people come and go in our lives for reason if only to mold us into the person we are to become.

Overall I enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read the next one even if they are predictable at times. This is the second in the series and I am going to read the first one here shortly. Then go onto the next. Easy fun read to take your mind off of everything.

Young Sherlock is back

Andrew Lane's second Young Sherlock Holmes book, RED LEECH, is every bit as enjoyable as his first. This time Holmes is off to America in pursuit of dastardly Confederates who are harboring a living (but deranged) John Wilkes Booth. Not sure why the publicity doesn't play up the Booth angle (it's not mentioned in the plot blurbs, etc.), because this is a heck of a hook! This Young Sherlock book is less of a mystery and more of fast-paced chase, with many imaginative set-pieces and terrific action. Sherlock's time aboard the paddle steamer SS Scotia is my favorite part of the book. Lane has obviously done some excellent research, and his description of the ship and voyage really transports the reader. I also enjoyed Sherlock learning the violin during this section, and meeting a very famous German ballon enthusiast (I won't spoil it, but it shouldn't be too hard to guess). All the American locations are wonderfully drawn, as are the villains, and I really love that we get to see Holmes use his first disguise while in New York City.

My only (constructive) criticism is there is no puzzling mystery that anchors the book and motivates Holmes' investigation (aside from the living Booth -- which is not really treated as mystery). Yes, the villains do have a master plan, but their plan is not teased out with clues that Sherlock sniffs out along the way. As I said, it's really just a kidnap and chase, and all is revealed to Holmes (James Bond style) when he reaches the end of the line. But I guess there's nothing necessarily wrong with this. In fact, I think the core readership will love the fast pace over mind work. But one of the things I so loved about Death Cloud is that it had the mystery of the killer smoke at its heart. That made it a Holmes book. Something to think about for book 3, BLACK ICE, which cannot come soon enough for this (Young) Sherlock Holmes fan!

Here's hoping we see more of a teenage Holmes in the future

Sherlock Holmes has solved some of the greatest mysteries, battled with diabolical criminals, and basically out-thought even the smartest of men. It comes as somewhat of a relief, then, to know that at some point he went through puberty just like everyone else. Andrew Lane once again provides a glimpse into the life of teenage Holmes in REBEL FIRE, the second book that explores how the Holmes legend began. Most of Sherlock's adventures are centered on London, England, but this time he unwittingly becomes involved in a case that has an American twist.

The last thing Sherlock wants is his tutor, Amyus Crowe, and Crowe's lovely daughter, Virginia, to leave. But Crowe feels compelled to return to America once Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother, shows up with some troubling news. Apparently, John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot President Abraham Lincoln, may still be alive and in hiding somewhere very close. Naturally inquisitive, Sherlock takes it upon himself to investigate. With the help of his friend Matty, Sherlock manages to stumble upon a group of men hiding Booth. Of course, chaos ensues. After a minor mishap, Sherlock arrives back to tell Crowe and Mycroft that Booth is in fact alive, but fleeing back to America.

Crowe immediately makes plans to track these men, and since Sherlock and Matty are the only ones to see what they look like, they are invited along for the ride. On the way to the port, though, Matty is taken hostage, and it's up to Sherlock, Crowe and Virginia to help rescue him. This is easier said than done, and before Sherlock can even think about helping Matty, he'll first need to survive the boat ride to America. Apparently the group that is protecting Booth is not very happy that someone has stumbled upon their little scheme --- especially a teenager. Trouble is found in all places, and Sherlock has his hands full on the ship in the middle of the ocean.

It wouldn't be a Sherlock Holmes mystery without a mastermind criminal, and REBEL FIRE doesn't disappoint in that department. Let's just say that blood-sucking leeches are involved somehow, and I'll leave it at that. Despite Sherlock's initial focus of just finding Matty, he soon becomes embroiled in a much larger scheme of a few leaders from the South hoping to restart the devastating American Civil War. It's going to take all of Sherlock's ingenuity, smarts and willpower to escape unscathed this time.

It's not very often that you get the chance to see the origins of legendary characters such as Sherlock Holmes, and the Conan Doyle Estate certainly believes that Andrew Lane's storytelling has done a credible job of bringing a young Holmes to life. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, apparently, as it is interesting to see the interplay between Sherlock and Mycroft and where Sherlock might have picked up a few of his tricks of perception. Lane also stays true to the fact that Holmes will put himself in the midst of any mystery, even if it means danger, in order to save the day. Here's hoping we see more of teenage Holmes in the future.
