Not a good book for first-time learners

This book was used for my intro hematology class. As a reference it is very detailed, however it is not a good book to learn hematology for the first time. It is highly granular and doesn't focus on concepts. Because of this, our lectures and tests were very based on rote memorization without the bigger picture of the biological concepts. The former is what students forget immediately, the latter is what students remember for much longer.

About the Author
James ‘SplitSuit’ Sweeney began playing poker in 2004. What started as home games and smaller tournaments soon turned into a business. From grinding live games at Turning Stone Casino, to SNGs, to PLO8 cash games, James quickly began to strengthen his poker theory and strategies. In 2007 James returned to his NLHE roots and began grinding full ring cash games. Interested in not only playing, but sharing his knowledge, he began taking on students. Over the years his coaching methedologies have only improved, and he has coached over 300 students in that time. He also began making training videos for the once Stox Poker Training, and is now on the CardRunners roster as well. Teaching has been a passion of James’, and poker was the perfect outlet given the various strategic levels the game offers. In late 2010 James finished his first book, and he plans on writing another one in 2011. While poker will always be a semi-professional avenue for him, James hopes to always be teaching at a professional level. Good content, but there are issues....

If you want to learn micro / small stakes full ring there isn't a better book for todays games on the market, if you understand the ideas and learn from them then you will make the purchase price back many times over. Understand and learn being the key points.....

The book is a textbook so you need to treat it as such, you need to read and digest the information a couple of times for it to sink in, sometimes James loses himself in details, to a beginner I think some of the content might go a little too in-depth and if careful attention isn't paid, then the reader will lose his focus on the basic concepts James is trying to get across.

The font size in the book is a tad small, now this might be due to the fact that there is a ton of information to digest and page number restrictions might be in effect, if this is the case then making the book two volumes (like the Harrington books) might have been a better option. Secondly, there are a lot of graphics in the book, unfortunately all of them are in grey, colour graphics would of been a lot better to illustrate the points, again, cost reduction probably the cause but I would have gladly paid twice the price for two volumes with bigger fonts and colour graphics. Compare this book to 'Exploiting Regulars' from the same publisher to see what I mean.

I disagree with the way light 4 betting is presented, at lower stakes I do not think that there is that much light 3 betting going on (maybe button/blind vs blind) but you really need to pay attention and concentrate on the wording in the book, if you are not careful you might start to spew with light 4 betting. I think this section in particular could do with a major re-write.

In fact, overall the editing could have been a lot better done, there seems to be too much stuff thrown at the reader hoping some of it sticks. I might be being a bit unfair to the author saying that, but in my opinion he has been let down with the editing and layout of the book

As I said at the beginning, the book will certainly improve your Full Ring game and I do recommend you purchase it, but before you do I suggest you read the following books, as these will help clarify and re-enforce some of the things this book is telling you, and in a far better way.

Hole Card Confessions (Owen Gaines)

Overall, excellent content but poorly presented, Worth the money as long as you put the effort in to grasp it.

Fantastic for teaching exploitative play in FR live settings

Since Black Friday many players in the US have been making the transition to more and more live full ring NLHE play. Players accustomed to winning regularly at $1/$2 and higher levels in 6max play online are finding that FR live play is softer and generally easier. SplitSuit's book, however, can give a player transitioning to full ring live play a few more arrows in the quiver as they make the move.

Ultimately, this book is about micro and small stakes online (mostly at 100nl and below). However, live, the theories and concepts presented in the book apply all the way up to 1000nl ($5/$10). This is because when you play higher than 100nl online, you typically have to strive for balanced play, optimal play. You are mostly playing against other regulars who have a real clue about what they are doing. And so the games are more about metagame and leveling wars along with finding optimal lines. However, live poker is finding ways to exploit specific opponents. The ability to categorize opponents and then attack specific weaknesses is huge in live play, because the player pool is generally weaker, and it is much easier to find fundamental errors. In addition, balancing your play live is simply not as important (especially at the $1/$2 and $2/$5 tables) because most of your opponents simply aren't paying attention.

Dynamic Full Ring Poker gives you the tools to attack weaknesses in your opponent's play. SplitSuit offers a way to think about poker that goes beyond telling you how to think about everything, and instead changes everything about the way you think. I find myself doing a much better job planning each and every hand about how to make money given the situation - which leads me to make folds preflop that others might never make, and makes me feel empowered to raise in situations I never would have 6 months ago - because of this book. It didn't give me a roadmap or a starting hand guide, rather, it contextualized the game. I think about situations, ranges, and combinations, stack sizes, position, and how I can exploit it to try to create the most profitable line.

This book is extremely dense. Others have talked about it as a text book - and to be sure, it is. In fact, I think this could be expanded into at least two volumes - I found myself wanting to hear more of what SplitSuit had to say about certain situations, not so that I could copy his play, but because he made me think about my own. I would recommend it for players who are really ready to study and take a huge step forward in their play through the simple value of thinking about process instead of result. This is the best book on the market for understanding the easiest way to crush the local live NLHE games through exploitative play.

A book to think and get better in your poker skills overall

In recent years the poker scene have been dominated in all aspects by short handed NLHE (6MAX and HU) and has been a lack of good information about full ring. I have been a poker player by 4 years now, in am returning to my roots, full ring. I was playing ABC poker, and this strategy is good to barely be a winner, but there is so much room to get better, and opportunities to make money out there, and Dynamic Full Ring is a tool to get that, take your game to the next level.

The author draws from the beginning the main objective of the book: make the reader think about poker. This book is not a recipe, so don't look for guidelines on how to do this or that, this book teach you how to think about poker. The content of the book is presented mostly in two main parts: preflop part and postflop part. The first part is pure gold, and is also the largest. There is a quite simple explanation for this is that the author begins with the premise that the preflop play is important for any poker player and any form of poker, and it is from here that the player should start to see and analyze all conditions and situations present in the game and opponents. Statistics charts and stats definitions are used in the book to be used in different types of opponents and exploit these accordingly, teaching you how to think beyond ordinary. Each chapter introduces a new concept that is carefully developed and explained in a simple way, ranging from calls to 4bets. This part is solid, and is the core of the book. Read it, re-read, but if you don't understand what author means in each chapter don't try to apply it on the table.

Part 2 is just as solid as the first, and is based entirely on the foundation developed in the previous part. The author sets the continuum that exists between our actions postflop and preflop. The situations encountered in the last are direct consequence of our actions in the first, especially when we face more difficult opponents. This part goes exactly like the first one, with depth analysis of several situations and opponents while the author present and develop new strategies and concepts.

A chapter, that i consider a bonus, is the one about creative lines. This chapter is my favorite, because it forces you to think outside the box, and this is a valuable resource against regulars that think poker in higher levels.

Overall: I recommend the book, its well written. I think this book is most intermediate, and though a beginner can benefit from it, i think someone with fundamentals and some history in the game can get the most of it, and like i said in the title, the framework used in this book is going to help you in your poker thinking skills overall.

Marci Alborghetti herself seems to have plunged into a full realm of Christian service, including serving meals and leading a book discussion group at a church-sponsored homeless shelter, and visiting and advocating for prisoners. Her passionate activity lends an air of authority to her writing. And yet her stated and obvious purpose is not to drag readers into service that is full-steam ahead, but to encourage or maybe exhort us to take small steps in the direction of ministry among the marginalized, either in our own neighborhoods or worldwide --- ministry that acknowledges a person's humanity and addresses personal temporal and spiritual needs.

She repeatedly nudges readers toward the stance that doing something is better than doing nothing. And she similarly says that prayer is foundational to service. "Service starts with prayer, particularly when we are uncertain about how --- or whether --- to take action. By praying, we prepare ourselves for the journey ahead. We accept that first sliver of grace. Sincere prayer doesn't take the place of action; it nourishes us for action."

Alborghetti's anecdotes, many of them written in the first person, lighten the prose. In the first chapter, she describes the scenario of a thief breaking into her third-floor apartment, mysteriously through a window. (Was Spiderman the thief? she muses.) She describes this as a transformational "wake-up call" to action. She didn't move out of the questionable neighborhood. She began praying for the thief, even when she saw a young woman on the street wearing a necklace she recognized as hers. And she gave "a portion of the insurance payment" to my "church programs assisting the poor." It was a small but significant beginning that led her on a journey of ministry among the poor that she'd "never have had the courage to deliberately choose."

Subsequent chapters deal with teaching children the importance of generosity (charitable giving) and community service; with paying attention to and choosing venues of service, including intentional kindnesses; with opening oneself to fiscal generosity; with seeking out personal mentors and parish-wide models for action; with serving in a nonjudgmental mode; with persevering through discouragements and bureaucratic dysfunctions; with accepting grace for the journey. Most chapters include biblical reflection and a brief sketch of a saint, biblical or more recent, whose life story and ministry illustrate the text. Chapters end with a psalm selection, an insightful prayer, questions for reflection or discussion, and "service suggestions."

Alborghetti's Catholic faith is evident in her language, her examples, and her discussion of local parish ministries. But her message is by no means parochial; it is applicable to a much broader readership, as exemplified by a short, warm afterword by Senator Joseph Lieberman, who adds a Jewish reflection on service.

Practical Advice for Living a Life of Service

What does it mean to practice Christian service? Do we really love Jesus if we ignore His frequent exhortation to service? How do we open ourselves to the God-given grace that makes service possible? These are the questions Marci Alborghetti sets out to answer in "A Willing Heart: How to Serve When You Think You Can't."

Jesus instructs us to "love our enemies." How can we possibly love someone we don't even like? Alborghetti states that "we must think of love as an act of will, an action we take and not a feeling that overwhelms us - a verb and not a noun. . . The best way to actually love is through service." Alborghetti goes on to explore the many forms that service can take and ways to make it a natural part of life.

Service can (and should) be a family activity. Children who see their parents engaging in service will soon incorporate it into their own lives. Prayer is an important form of service in itself. An easy way to begin incorporating service into one's life is to choose one person in need to pray for each day. Prayer also "strengthens and prepares us for active service."

We need to allow God to choose who we serve. While we may have inclinations about where we would like to serve, "we must follow where God leads us when it comes to service, even when we are uncertain about the results or have no expectation." God will both stretch our comfort zones as well as teach us valuable lessons. "No one is off-limits. We are not allowed to reject anyone."

Alborghetti also discusses how to cope when we are tired and worn out by service. She acknowledges the need to rest from time to time, but emphasizes that God will provide the grace we need to persevere.

"A Willing Heart" is full of inspiration and practical advice. It will help readers progress in their ability and willingness to serve.

You simply cannot go wrong buying any of Brian Tracy's works. Whether it be books, Cd's, DVD's, audio programs or training in any form, he is an acknowledged master who has "been there and done that." From a nobody with nothing, to a multi, multi-millionaire, he teaches you what really works, not just theory or conjecture as so many others do. He has changed more lives for the better than you can possibly imagine. I know...he changed mine!

I selected one of the insights in The Art of War because I was again reminded of it while sharing Brian Tracy's thoughts about negotiation, especially what he shares in Chapter 12, "Preparation Is the Key." The titles he selected for the 21 chapters could serve as a foundation or framework when preparing for a negotiation, whatever its nature and extent may be. Tracy correctly views negotiation with a wide lens. It could involve the terms and conditions of employment, purchasing a home or a vehicle, or convincing enough people to support a course of action. It could also involve a teenager and her or his parents discussing curfew or members of a jury struggling to reach a verdict. I agree with Tracy: "Life may be viewed as one long, extended negotiating session, from the cradle to the grave. Negotiation never stops." It really doesn't. "Your ability to negotiate successfully is essential to your success in all your interactions with other people." Dead on.

These are the chapter titles that I think express especially important principles:

I have read and reviewed most of the 50+ books that Brian Tracy has written. Inevitably, he recycles information, insights, and counsel in many of them because (a) their relevance is multi-dimensional and (b) he possesses a remarkably wide and deep knowledge of the business world, an acumen that enables him to make connections and suggest similarities that only a few business thinkers would recognize. He also possesses world-class reasoning and writing skills. Now he is in the process of producing a series of volumes (each less than 100 pages) in "The Brian Tracy Success Library." I have now read and reviewed two and will read and review others in months to come.

These are brief in length but by no means "small" books. On the contrary, they offer a unique abundance of material that will be of substantial value to those now preparing for a business career or have only recently embarked upon one. For experienced managers, these volumes offer helpful reminders of business fundamentals that are too frequently. Amazon now sells this book for $8.96. How much is a helpful idea worth? There are hundreds in this book. You do the math. However, please keep in mind Thomas Edison's observation: "Vision without execution is hallucination."

Linear algebra for mathematicians

I've just been looking on Amazon to see how some of my favorite old math texts are doing. I used this one about twenty years ago as a supplementary reference in a graduate course, and I still have my copy.
Everybody with some mathematical background knows the name of Paul Richard Halmos. I saw him speak at Kent State University while I was an undergraduate there (some twenty-odd years ago); to this day I remember the sheer elegance of his presentation and even recall some of the specific points on which, like a magician, he drew gasps and applause from his audience of mathematicians and math students.
This book displays the same elegance. If you're looking for a book that provides an exposition of linear algebra the way mathematicians think of it, this is it.
This very fact will probably be a stumbling block for some readers. The difficulty is that, in order to appreciate what Halmos is up to here, you have to have _enough_ practice in mathematical thinking to grasp that linear algebra isn't the same thing as matrix algebra.
In your introductory linear algebra course, linear transformations were probably simply identified with matrices. But really (i.e., mathematically), a linear transformation is a special sort of mathematical object, one that can be _represented_ by a matrix (actually by a lot of different matrices) once a coordinate system has been introduced, but one that 'lives' in the spaces with which abstract algebra deals, independently of any choice of coordinates.
In short, don't expect numbers and calculations here. This book is about abstract algebraic structure, not about matrix computations.
If that's not what you're looking for, you'll probably be disappointed in this book. If that _is_ what you want, you may still find this book hard going, but the rewards will be worth the effort.

The great classic of linear algebra

This book has been around for so many years that reviewing it may seem a waste of time. Still, we should not forget that new students keep appearing! Halmos is a wonderful text. Besides the clarity which marks all of his books, this one has a pleasant characteristic: all concepts are patiently motivated (in words!) before becoming part of the formalism. It was written at the time when the author, a distinguished mathematician by himself, was under the spell of John von Neumann, at Princeton. Perhaps related to that is the fact that you find surprising, brilliant proofs of even very well established results ( as, for instance, of the Schwartz inequality). It has a clear slant to Hilbert space, despite the title, and the treatment of orthonormal systems and the spectrum theorem is very good. On the other hand, there is little about linear mappings between vector spaces of different dimensions, which are crucial for differential geometry. But this can be found elsewhere. The problems are useful and, in general, not very difficult. All in all, an important tool for a mathematical education.

A Classic for the mathematically-inclined. Good preparation for learning quantum mechanics.

This was one of the two textbooks (along with Rudin's Principles of Mathematical Analysis) that was used for the hot-shot freshman Math 218x course taught by Elias Stein at Princeton some years ago.

It is a great book, one of my all-time favorites. It requires a bit of mathematical maturity, that is a love of mathematical proof and simplifying abstractions. This book abstractly defines vector spaces and linear transformations between them without immediately introducing coordinates. This approach is vastly superior to immediately extorting the reader to study the algebraic and arithmetic properties n-tuples of numbers (vectors) and matrices (n x n tables of numbers) which parameterize the underlying abstract vectors and linear transformations, respectively.

If I taught a linear algebra course using this book then there are a few deficiencies I would try to correct, however.

1. The polar decomposition is covered but the singular value decomposition (for linear transformations between different inner product spaces) is not mentioned. This is a pretty big gap in terms of applications, although it's trivial to get the singular value decomposition if you have the polar decomposition.

2. The identification of an reflexive vector space with its double-dual was a stumbling block for me when I took the course. There was no mathematical definition of "identify", and so I was confused. Perhaps a good way to remedy this is to give a problem with the example of the Banach space L^p (perhaps just on a finite set of just two elements), and show how L^p is dual to L^p'.

3. The section on tensor products should be improved and expanded, especially in light of the new field of quantum information theory. I remember being quite confused about what a tensor product was until I realized some years later that the tensor product of L^2(R) with itself is L^2(R^2), an example which I think should be mentioned, even if it requires a bit of vagueness about Lebesgue measurability.

4. It would be nice to have a problem (or take-home final) where the reader proves the spectral theorem using minimal polynomials without recourse to determinants, and introduces the functional calculus just using polynomials. It is disturbing to see how many physics grad students are so hung up thinking of eigenvalues only as roots of the characteristic polynomial that they can't understand properties of the spectrum of a self-adjoint transformation A by considering polynomials of A.

The functional calculus could be introduced with the following

Problem: For a function f:R->R and a self-adjoint matrix A (or more generally a possibly nonunitarily diagonalizable matrix A with complex eigenvalues and f:C->C) define f(A)=P(A) where P is a polynomial chosen so that P(lamda) = f(lamda) for all lamda.

A. Show that f(A) is well defined.
B. Show that (f+g) (A) =f(A)+g(A), (fg)(A) = f(A) g(A), and (f composed g) (A) = f(g(A))
C. Show that d/dt exp(tA) = Aexp(tA)
D. Show that it is false that d/dt exp(A+tB) = B exp(A+tB) for matrices A and B.
E. If f is differentiable show that d/dt Tr f(A+tB) = Tr B f'(A+tB)
F. Show that the rotation U(theta) of R^2 by an angle theta is given by Exp(tJ), where J={{0,1},{-1,0}}.

5. I missed the connection between polynomials of a matrix and the Jordan form when I learned linear algebra from this book. Perhaps the following problems would be helpful, and give a proper finite-dimensional introduction to the Dunford calculus (before it is slightly-obfuscated in infinite dimensions using Cauchy's formula):

Problem A: Let P be a complex polynomial, and let A be a linear transformation on a complex vector space, with eigenvalues {z_1,...,z_n}, and let the Jordan block corresponding to z_k have a string of 1's that is at most s_k elements long. Then the value of P(A) is determined by the values of P and its first s_k derivatives at the z_k. (One defines the derivative of a function from C to C by taking a limit of difference quotients, in the same way one defines a derivative of a real function. In particular, the usual rules for differentiating polynomials apply.)

Problem B: (Finite-dimensional Dunford calculus, assuming differentiablity only on the spectrum) Suppose that f:C->C has s_k complex derivatives at the z_k. Define f(A)=P(A), where P is a polynomial with derivatives up to order s_k agreeing with those of f at the z_k. Show that such polynomials always exist. (In particular, f(A) is well-defined by problem A.) Show that (f+g)(A)=f(A)+g(A), f(A)g(A)=(fg)(A), and f(g(A))=h(A), where h is the composition of f and g as functions from C->C.

Problem C: Use B to show that every nonsigular matrix has a square root, as do singular matrices with no 1's in the jordan block for the eigenvalue 0.

Problem D: Are the only matrices with square roots given by problem C?

Except for property (3) above, this is a good book for students who are interested in taking a quantum mechanics or quantum computing course in the future.

6. A bit more connection to calculus should be made, if only in optional exercises. Students should know how to compute d/dt det(A) and d/dt A^(-1), where A=A(t) is a matrix-valued function of time t.

This Everyman`s library hardbound book features 8 excellent short stories. Included are: The Speckled Band, Silver Blaze, The Copper Beeches, The Missing Three-Quarter, The Dancing Men, The Naval Treaty, The Red-Headed League, and The Bruce-Partington Plans. If you like Sherlock Holmes you won`t go wrong here. This edition at this price is a bargain with large clear type on creme colored wide margined paper. The binding is excellent too. I almost forgot. There are some very good black and white drawings that appear throughout the book.

My daughter is 11 and had to read a mystery for school. She loves the Holmes movies so this book was an easy choice. While some of the words in the stories were a little difficult for her, it was not too difficult for her to understand. She enjoyed reading the different mysteries and related very well to the great detective.

Great Book, can't recommend enough

So these everyman's classic children classics books look fantastic. The paper is awesome quality. The Cover is great, the art is beautiful and the lace bookmark is so practical. I also would recommend the complete sherlock holmes two volume paperback set. Also the other everymans children classics look great too so I would recommend you pick up a few of the others like George MacDonald's.

Excerpt Goldilocks had always wanted to write a novel.

She learned to read before she went to kindergarten.

In grade school, she always had her nose in a book.

A hidden gem!

I've used Randy's Snowflake Method before from his website (advancedfictionwriting.com) and while it gave me the best results of any creative paradigm I've tried, the instruction left me feeling a little glassy-eyed.

This book is amazing. It is a hidden gem and I hope this review helps others give it a chance.

There are three layers to this book - the first layer is that you get to read a novel about a girl who learns how to use the Snowflake method on her own story. You learn right along side Goldilocks without realizing you're learning. The examples she reviews with Baby Bear are just as good as if you went to a conference on your own.

The second layer is seeing the application of the lessons. You realize through the story (for me it was about halfway through) that you are actually seeing a plot line unfold that has nothing to do with the World War II story Goldilocks is writing. You might even realize this is the real example Randy was trying to give, not the WWII romance.

The third is the actual instruction - and let me say, this instruction was so much clearer than what was on the website. Maybe it's because of the first two layers... but I really feel like I learned so much more from this book than others.

Writing books talk about writing like it's the driest thing in the world. Randy's book talks about writing and shows us, three times, that his method works.

I don't know what type of writer you are. Maybe the Snowflake method doesn't work for you. But if you've ever read up on it and it sounded interesting, give this book a shot! It is well worth it.

Octogenarian LOVES Randy Ingermanson's SNOWFLAKE METHOD!

I am in my 80s, living in a retirement community, and am thrilled that I have a reason to get up everyday. This is the best book on writing a book I have ever encountered.

I am not yet done with this book but I cannot put it down. I am already seeing that this is really helping me shape the novel that has been in my head for years. Some have posted the story within the book was distracting but I am able to identify with his lead character attempting to write a book and her obstacles that I really do believe it was exactly what I needed. There are tons of books on how to write a book and I have read several. Using a fictional character to demonstrate her obstacles brings them more to life than just saying- create an outline and here is how. I have been reading and working with a few great books highly rated that still have me at the first sentence of my creation with no real progress. I already have things moving along now and I have only read a portion of the book. Thank you for writing this! I recommend this to anyone who has not been successful with workshops or the ones I call dreamers who can see the book play out in their minds but are stumped with how to proceed. I am going to consider another book by the author when I am done if I feel I need it. I cannot recommend it enough! Do not be sidetracked by trying to read past the whole Goldilocks analogy. Instead picture yourself as Goldilocks having the experience
