About the Author
Herbert S. Klein is Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, Professor of History, and senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, at Stanford University, as well as Gouverneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia University. Klein is the author of some 20 books and 155 articles in several languages on Latin America and on comparative themes in social and economic history. Among these books are four comparative studies of slavery, the most recent of which are African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean (co-author), The Atlantic Slave Trade, and Slavery and the Economy of S�o Paulo, 1750-1850 (co-author). He has also published on such diverse themes as The American Finances of the Spanish Empire, 1680-1809 and A Population History of the United States and is co-author of Brazil Since 1980 and Mexico Since 1980.

Francisco Vidal Luna was Professor of Economics at the Universidade de S�o Paulo until his retirement in 1997. Aside from his academic career, he was Chief da Assessoria Econ�mica da Secretaria da Fazenda do Estado de S�o Paulo (1983-1985), Head of IPLAN-IPEA (1985-1986), and Secret�rio de Planejamento of the Secretaria do Planejamento of the Presid�ncia da Rep�blica (1986-1987). Luna was also socio-gerente, vice-president, and president of the Banco Inter-American Express (1987-2002). In 2005, he became the Secretary of Planning and Budget of the Municipality of S�o Paulo, and in 2008, he took on the role of Secretary of Economy and Planning of the state government of S�o Paulo. Luna is the author of some 50 articles and papers and 11 books on Brazilian economic history and the Brazilian economy, among which are Minas Gerais: Escravos e Senhores, Minas Colonial: Economia e Sociedade (co-author), Slavery and the Economy of S�o Paulo, 1750-1850 (co-author), and Brazil since 1980 (co-author).

a brisk survey of a vast topic

Klein and Luna's Slavery in Brazil is a dense, informative survey of recent historical scholarship on slavery in Brazil in 320 pages. It is divided into two parts, one a chronological survey of "The Political Economy of Slave Labor" and the other a less strictly chronological survey of themes in the social history of slavery. Inevitably, the text is dense and somewhat breathless, without many anecdotes or much direct human interest; Klein and Luna instead emphasize economic and demographic data and descriptions of laws and institutions. The social history section is slanted towards the 18th and especially the 19th century; there probably isn't enough information about earlier periods to treat them fully. Still, I got a lot out of the book. Two aspects of it that were particularly interesting to me were, first, its discussion of themes in Brazilian historiography (see, for example, pp. 115-118ff on how historians have gradually moved beyond picturing Brazilian society as a society composed solely of masters and slaves) and, second, the excellent final chapter on how freedmen and former slaveowners adjusted to emancipation. Klein and Luna compare aspects of Brazilian slavery to slavery in Spanish America and the United States occasionally throughout the text. A good overview of a huge subject.

too superficial to be of much use

The book tries to cover too much to be very insightful about the topic. It is very general. As a rudimentary introduction it may be of some use, but for any real knowledge of Brazilian slavery one has to turn to more detailed studies.

inspiring & useful read!

Normally I find myself skimming business and marketing books, gleaning what I need. This book was very different... I found myself actually reading the book and getting numerous points of inspiration and the book is useful enough for practical application in real situations. I've used the book and referenced it a ton already. I actually bought both the digital version after getting the hardcover version so I had something more travel friendly. I still like paper for bedside....

"The villain throughout this book is the silo."

Increasingly and more extensively, successful brands are using technology to create memorable experiences for their customers, guided and informed by customer centricity, rejection of silos (many of which are disguised as human beings), thinking and behaving like a start-up, developing a multi-disciplinary mindset, and viewing the brand as a service in a relationship rather than as a product. That is to say, Bob Lord and Ray Velez assert in this book that there is a process during which creativity, technology, and media are converging to a point at which they will soon become indistinguishable from one another.

Of special importance to me is the process by which they devised what they call the "Razorfish Model," based on their real-world experiences with their own firm bearing that name. What they learned from two of their clients, explained in the Introduction: "Cisco needed to think past its organizational prejudices to create a Web presence that made sense to customers; MLB needed to get its various stakeholders on board to create a consumer-centric experience rather than a fragmented one. Now its content id available everywhere consumers are: on computers, tablets, and mobile phones, on Apple TV, Roku, and Xbox." The information, insights, and counsel they share in this book is based on more than 15 years of living "at the center of convergence."

Before concluding their book, Lord and Velez observe, "Keeping up with all this may seem like a dizzying prospect, but it doesn't have to be. Winners in the twenty-first century won't be distinguished by how fast they master buzzwords or how many faddish new digital marketing campaigns they undertake. Those winners will be organizations whose main focus is on their consumer's journey [one that determines the nature and extent of their own] and who possess a relentless desire to understand and improve that journey from beginning to end...Rather than stay married to the old way of doing things, embrace change and think about how innovation can be put to work to benefit your customer. Approach technology the way a consumer would, without fear or fervor and with a sense of wonder and curiosity. And always remember that if you follow your customer you can't go wrong."

Steve Jobs would take a different approach while agreeing with those comments in principle. For him, customer-centricity meant creating products and services that may have no appeal or value until they are experienced. He once observed, "You can't just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they'll want something new." Years earlier, Henry Ford said that if he asked people what they want, they'd say "faster horses." For Jobs as well as for Bob Lord and Ray Velez, creativity, technology, and media are interdependent and rapidly becoming interchangeable. That process, in a word, is "convergence" and for business leaders, its only limits for them will be self-imposed.

great sex but ...

this is really two stories it takes place in the sixteenth century one is the story of an incan princess named inez who is schooled in sexuality by her tutor lorenzo who proves to be an unscuplulous snake when he is sent away she races after him heaven knows why she even pretends to be a boy there is lots of unconventional sex the other main character is a young english woman named jane who is serching for her brother named andrew both have many sexual adventures and thankfully some of them are with women but the reason I did not give this novel five stars is there were scenes where the woman were forced into sex it bordered on rape and that is repugnant I dont find reticence stimulating next in one scene inez is whipped in fact there were several such scenes between jane and inez the viceroy in my opinion was scum and I find bdsm disgusting that is not a judgement just my opinion my favorite scene is where inez is captured by amazons and initiated into the tribe but all ends well inez winds up with andrew and jane with don xavier a vicerory even with its flaws I still recommend this novel for the sexually open minded

"What is a Lightbody" is a channeled book that gives information about our literal transition into a light filled body.....say what? Well, if you picked up this book you already know what I'm talking about and don't need an explanation about ascension. What I loved about this material is that it is clear, engaging and informational. There are twelve levels of transition into the lightbody and each level is given an explanation along with physical, emotional and spiritual repercussions for the person experiencing it. Very helpful! Archangel Ariel explains that we have gone through this process many times before and that if you are here you are choosing to ascend. Knowing what is happening and what symptoms occur in the physical body brings about a calm knowing instead a fear based response. Thank you for such a wonderful book!

This book worked for me from the day it arrived to me. It clearly explains the karma game, ascension, 12 dimensions of the universe, the evolving human light body and its various stages of development. I am amazed by the clarity of information in this book. But when I realize that it comes from Archangel Ariel who lives in the 11th dimension, I know why it is so precise, useful and mixed with a good deal of humor (to keep your spirits high).

The tools provided in this book are so easy to use and simply phenomenal. They work as soon as you start using them.

The Unified Chakra Meditation to develop the Light Body, Triple Grid for creating an energetically clean and stable environment, Awakening Vow Break, Entity Release and various Invocations are very easy to use and have tremendous power to transform and catapult you into higher stages of spiritual and light body development.

I purchased this book after taking a course on Axiatonal Re-alignment and found it to be an excellent resource for working with the lightbody as well as understanding the changes that occur when your body is detoxing after this work. Just reading this book brings a person into a higher vibration as the concepts resonate with you at different levels. I recommend it for anyone interested in being a lightworker.

The first and last chapters are really interesting and great to read

The first and last chapters are really interesting and great to read. It is the middle chapters that were hard to read. The middle chapters present CM models and strategies that I tried to remember, I truly did, but I just could not connect the names to the right models or strategies. I'll give you a tip that my instructor gave me, do not try to memorize each model. Instead find and learn the models that connect with your classroom management philosophy, or CMP. Then practice these in your teaching.

Es un excelente libro, esta super completo y a excepcion de las imagenes, es mejor que la 6ta edicion debido a errores de traduccion al espa�ol en la sexta edicion. Espero y pronto salga la septima en espa�ol.
