Ron has opened the past as if it were a criminal investigation, only this time he attempts to explain how it was done. Suicide? Accident at the hands of his girlfriend’s heroin? Murder? Simple heart attack? Or a complete and utter hoax?

Ron looks into the complex mind of Jim Morrison and explores the nature of his relationship with his partner, Pamela Courson, so he can answer one of pop’s greatest mysteries: What really happened to Mr Mojo Risin’?

Mr Mojo Keeps on Risin'

Rock `n' Roll fiction books are rare, good ones are rarer, Ron Clooney's, Mr. Mojo Risin' Ain't Dead, falls into the rarer category.

Mr. Mojo Risin' Ain't Dead follows journalist, "Ron Clooney", after he encounters a man at a bar outside of Pere LaChaise Cemetery, whom he believes is a still alive Jim Morrison. "Ron" then sets off on his journalist's quest to find Jim Morrison. He first visits all the French archives, then he starts to meet people whom he thinks might be Morrison but discovers he might be seeing Morrison's face in the face of everyone he meets. Then he meets a street musician, alcoholic, Doug Prayer, who claims that he recorded an album with Jim Morrison in Paris, and offers him a tantalizing bit of evidence in a note in Jim Morrison's handwriting dated 1976, and then disappears. "Ron" tracks down and befriends Prayer, and slowly cajoles the story of Jim Morrison out of Prayer as well as his own story which is inextricably entwined with Morrison's.

In the category of Rock `n' Roll books, there might be the sub-genre of "Jim Morrison is still alive" (that includes non-fiction as well as fiction) and includes Doors keyboardist, Ray Manzarek's novel The Poet in Exile, which for the most part is a novel of lost opportunities, but Clooney in Mr. Mojo Risin' makes full use of those opportunities, and doesn't shy away from themes that you have to deal with in a book that looks at Jim Morrison, such as fathers and sons, existential issues of life and death, and the inner self.

Clooney also does something almost unheard of and unique in Mojo Risin', he includes photographs of Morrison's haunts, both the known and speculative. The first novel I ever saw this used in was From Time to Time by Jack Finney (a time travel book of another sort), I don't know if Clooney is familiar with Finney's book but he uses the device to great effect, it helps the reader to picture the environments Morrison frequented and adds a level of verisimilitude to the "Morrison is alive" storyline, instantly putting you in the world Jim Morrison would have experienced.

Mr. Mojo Risin' also considers what most other books about Jim Morrison don't or examine only peripherally and that is Pam Courson. Courson who was Jim Morrison's "cosmic mate" and part of Morrison's life from the almost the beginning of The Doors until Paris July 1971, she is intimately a part of the story than she is usually given credit for, and Clooney demonstrates a rare insight into Pam Courson.

There's a muscularity in the writing that belies the conclusion, which is startlingly different for this type of novel. Mr Mojo Risin' is a book that Doors fans, casual rock fans and fans of good writing of all stripes will want to read.

intereting read, if it's true, then he did'nt ask the questions most people would ask jim morrison, 1) why acknowledge your existence to a fan/journalist with no real history...2) if the reason you went away was prison and peace of mind,n then after 20 years would'nt you want to talk to a close band member or confidant and go from there...and finally # 3) WHY ???????

You won't put it down!

This is just a great book. Wonderful fiction..how Mr. Clooney makes the implausible SEEM plausible is truly unreal. It reads like a wonderful mystery and you can't wait to get to the end but you want it to go forever. This man is obssessed w/ Morrison about as much as I am!! Buy it!!! Read it!!!

This title helps inaugurate a new series, American Popular Culture through History, that will examine "the specific details of popular culture that reflect and inform the general undercurrents of the time." The 1910s reflects the decade-by-decade approach that the series will apply to the twentieth century.

The volume begins with a time line of popular culture events during the period. The time line is followed by chapters arranged in two parts. Part 1 offers an overview of everyday life in general and the "world of youth" in particular. Part 2 examines 12 broad topics, among them "Advertising," "Food," "Travel," and "Visual Arts." Chapters in this section average 20 pages in length. A brief list of typical costs for products is followed by extensive chapter notes and further reading.

This series joins several others that take a chronological approach to the study of American culture. Titles in Gale's American Eras and American Decades series cover many of the same topics but have a more accessible format and more visual appeal. However, the Gale titles cover politics, economics, religion, and more; and their greater range means that some aspects of popular culture are discussed in less detail than in Greenwood's volumes. For readers who are intrigued by the "Cost of Products" section in The 1910s, in particular, Grey House's Working Americans, 1880-1999 provides much more detail on personal finance, compiling decade-by-decade economic data to create profiles of representative but fictional families.

Full of interesting information

The author examines the years 1910 to 1919 in advertising, architecture, fashion, food, leisure activites, literature, music, performing arts, travel and visual arts. The chapters will be more interesting to the extent you are interested in the topic, but I thought the food chapter was exceptional, as it told us things like what Diamond Jim Brady ate for breakfast. If this book is the first in a series on "American Culture Through Popular History" as i understand it is, it is an auspicious inauguration of what should be a good series.

About the Author
As the author of landmark chemistry books and textbooks, Donald McQuarrie's name is synonymous with excellence in chemical education. From his classic text on Statistical Mechanics to his recent quantum-first tour de force on Physical Chemistry, McQuarrie's best selling textbooks are highly acclaimed by the chemistry community. McQuarrie received his PhD from the University of Oregon, and is Professor Emeritus from the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis. He makes his home at The Sea Ranch in California with his wife Carole, where he continues to write.�

John D. Simon became the first George B. Geller Professor of Chemistry at Duke University in 1998. He is currently Chair Chemistry Department at Duke and a faculty member of the Biochemistry, and Ophthalmology Departments of the Duke Medical Center. John graduated from Williams College in 1979 with a B.A. in Chemistry and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1983. After a postdoctoral fellowship with Professor Mostafa El-Sayed at UCLA, John joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at UCSD in 1985.

A much-needed book, though full of misprints.

A new text in physical chemistry was very much needed, and the McQuarrie-Simon book is very good in general. It was wise to exclude electrochemistry; the subject is full of bad theory. The problems are good, but they tend to be too simple (the old idea in Moore's book of having a special section of hard problems might have helped). Criticisms: The paper is too flimsy. The strong connections between quantum mechanics and spectroscopy are good, but the NMR chapter is not connected in this manner and does not belong in the book. There are many, many typos. I will just note the most egregious: an incorrect statement of the phase rule under the portrait of the noble head of Gibbs.
