About the Author
Jan Roberts-Breslin is an Associate Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in studio and field video production and media arts. She is also the Graduate Program Director at Emerson, responsible for coordinating the graduate curriculum and advising over a hundred masters students. She taught previously at Temple University and at Seton Hall University. For the past sixteen years, Jan has been a media artist and freelance producer/director of film, video, and interactive multimedia projects, including a feature film, documentaries, experimental work, and corporate productions. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Video Production from Temple University.

Making complex issues clear

This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Great foundation for film students

This book reads as a bit dated, but the foundations you learn from it are terrific. I used this as a textbook in a film production class and learned quite a lot. We were assigned certain chapters but I read the whole book on my own because I learned so much from it. If you're new to film and media production definitely pick up this book. I still keep it on my shelf and reference it every once in a while.

great undergraduate text

I assigned this book as a text for an introductory undergraduate course in popular culture because it quickly develops a solid understanding of the notion of culture, class distinctions and foundational Western cultural values and then brings all this together in a discussion of hi vs. pop culture and the nature of (pop) culture in a global, mobile society. What is more, it does this all in a remarkably short span, while still introducing foundational sociological theorists and theories, and does this in an engaging way by connecting theories to issues of everyday life. The book also introduces issues of class in a way that students don't reject--not an easy trick nowadays. Chapters 3 and 4 are also excellent examples of deductive and inductive argument, and the author uses well described and well chosen examples throughout (perhaps with the exception of his discussion of a novel at the start of the first chapter).

This study proceeds from the premise that Medea's murder of her children is the key to the play. We see that the introduction of this murder into the Medea-saga was Euripides' own innovation. We see that the play's themes include the classic opposition of Man and Woman. Finally, we see that in Greek culture the social order is maintained by strict adherence within the family to the rule that parents and children reciprocally nurture one another in their respective ages of helplessness. Through the heroine's repeated assaults on this fundamental and sacred value, the playwright most persuasively portrays her

Have only begun to read this little book. Little meaning it is about the size of a childs board book. This disappointed me. I was expecting a novel. Considered returning it even. But if you want a hot "little" read about the exploits of the character, this will do it for you. Reads like the fantasy section of Penthouse. Not sure if it's really worth $18.95 Canadian but it's paid for now so what the heck.

fun side of number theory

I would expect that anyone curious enough about number theory to look up this book would likely have enough background in math to follow this text. It doesn't require much knowledge beyond algebra, but it does require algebra. I took a college course in number theory and this was the text. I have found it to be an easy read, only requiring a few visits to Wolfram Alpha to clarify some background knowledge. The style and organization of the book reflects an appreciation for the creativity involved in math and number theory.

Lacking in pedagogy

I find the advertisement for this book deceptive because it doesn't mention that the book doesn't have answers to its exercises. It is possible for validated teachers to purchase the answers separately, but the publishers prevent students from acquiring them! I have managed to view some of the answers given by the author from another source, and he gives fascinating long explanations from which there can be much valuable learning. The author claims on page 3 that the book is also intended, "for an independent study or reading course." I find that to be untrue because someone doing independent study, like me, is crippled without the interesting techniques in the answers.

Excellent introduction to number theory

I had to buy this for an undergraduate course in number theory. The prose is excellent, humorous, and entertaining, and the proofs are clear and concise. Definitely recommended. After reading this book, I was hooked on the field.

About the Author
James Bastien was born in Bellingham, Washington, on April 10, 1934. His father, Clarence, was musical and played the violin. His mother, Dorothy, was a writer and a high school Latin and journalism instructor. After living in Seattle and Florida, the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Jim began his piano studies with Frances Mulkey North. Subsequently, Jim studied with the late Ariel Rubstein, the late Louis Artau, and the late Gyorgy Sandor.

Jim received his undergraduate and masters degrees from Southern Methodist University. He was a former member of the faculties of Notre Dame University, Tulane University, Loyola University (New Orleans), and the summer faculties of Tanglewood and the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan.

Jim met his wife Jane Smisor in New Orleans in 1960. They performed as the duo-piano team, Smisor and Bastien. In addition, Jim was a Columbia Artist accompanist whose collaborative career included appearances with Richard Tucker and John Alexander. During this time Jim and Jane started writing music to address the needs of their students. This was the beginning of the Bastien piano books that have inspired so many piano students and teachers.

The Bastien piano books have been published worldwide by the Neil A. Kjos Music Company since 1963 and are now translated into 14 languages. In 1999, The Music Teachers National Association presented Jim and Jane with the Lifetime Achievement Award, the association's highest honor, in recognition of their outstanding career in music and contribution to the music profession.

James W. Bastien, loving husband and father, and a passionate piano pedagogue and musician, passed away on December 7, 2005, in La Jolla, California. During his long career, Jim became internationally known through his contributions to piano teaching, composing, writing, adjudication, and performing. With more than 300 publications to his credit, the Bastien name has become synonymous with innovative piano pedagogy.

I learned the first time around on this series 20 plus years ago. Since that time I have been in a coma, and have had to relearn a lot of things. I am glad I found this series again. I also require occupational therapy with my left hand, and playing piano is doing wonders for Lefty.

This is a tale of scientific discovery and the colorful people who participated: Louis Agassiz, the young Swiss naturalist whose geological studies first convinced scientists that the earth has recently passed through an ice age; the Reverend William Buckland, an eccentric but respected Oxford professor who fought so hard against the ice-age theory before accepting it; James Croll, a Scots mechanic who educated himself as a scientist and first formulated the astronomic theory of ice ages; Milutin Milankovitch, the Serbian mathematician who gave the astronomic theory its firm quantitative foundation; and the many other astronomers, geochemists, geologists, paleontologists, and geophysicists who have been engaged for nearly a century and a half in the pressing search for a solution to the ice-age mystery.

Another Mystery is Solved!

Very informative! The book shows why and how it took over 100 years to prove what was pretty obvious to the pioneers in this theory.
I love books that irrefutably settle puzzling questions on how the world came to be. Thanks to this accounting I can now scratch Ice-Ages from my list of unsolved questions. Certainly a fascinating read!

Worthy and Illuminating

Well-written fascinating story of the Ice Ages. Over the past several hundred years scientists have had to overcome cultural and religious prejudices to begin to understand that there has been glaciation and ice cover cyclically over the land masses and those cycles have something to do with variations in the sunlight striking the earth, as well as atmospheric and other phenomena. This book is relevant because we are witnessing anthropomorphic climate change. However, the prejudices against knowledge and discovery even from other scientists is timeless. Vested interests are there essentially egocentric rather than corporate (see Merchants of Doubt by Oreskes) but formidable nonetheless. The life stories of the scientists are fun to read. Sheds light on humanity, science and ice: Illuminating.
